    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have really enjoyed the internship, particularly because of the team that I was placed in as I got brilliant exposure to lots of different departments and people as well as having an individual project and I learnt an incredible amount. I really enjoyed meeting lots of different people and learning about each of their individual careers and their specific department. Not knowing anything about insurance before starting this, I have learnt a great deal about the insurance sector.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues in my team because my individual project that I was working on is a project that they have been meaning to do for a while so I know that the work that I have done is definitely going to be used in the future. Also I did a lot of work on different projects, which included a service offering meeting with various different carriers and then I wrote the meeting up and presented the findings to the team which contributed a lot to the teams general strategy.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a lot of support and guidance by my specific manager for my individual project that I was working on. Before the project she gave me step my step tasks in order to gain the knowledge to work on the project. I got set a lot of challenging tasks, where my manager told me what the end goal was but not the steps needed, therefore it enabled me to work out the solution due to problem solving therefore learning a lot more about how to do the process, which helped me for the next time I was doing it.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was very busy every day and was never looking for things to do, which I really enjoyed. I had my individual project that I was constantly working on as well as additional tasks and a group project. As a result I constantly had things to be working on as well as going to meetings with the team. The last week I did a lot longer hours due to wanting to get the presentation perfect as well as doing my individual project.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I had a lot of responsibility in my team because my individual project that I was working on is a project that they have been meaning to do for a while so I know that the work that I have done is definitely going to be used in the future. Also I did a lot of work on different projects, which included a service offering meeting with various different carriers and then I wrote the meeting up and presented the findings to the team which contributed a lot to the teams general strategy.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have learnt so many skills during my internship. In particular I used excel every day for my individual project, therefore I developed a lot of excel skills, which will be so valuable for my masters degree in geophysical hazards. Also I have developed a lot of people skills through meeting a lot of different people and networking, which will hopefully be valuable in the future. Also presentation skills have improved so much and I am now way more confident in presenting.
