The Role
The placement has been ideal for me to gain the vital experience which is going to put me ahead of others when it comes to applying for jobs post application. With the degree being in business studies, the placement has effectively shown me how to run my own business from the branch which is what I have enjoyed most, having a hands on experience in an environment which can be challenging yet extremely rewarding.
I have always felt valued by my direct colleagues. The colleagues I have had the privilege to work with I feel do not only value me as a colleague, but now as a friend, which is an extremely important element in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
The initial support in making sure I was settled in my placement was extremely helpful and made me feel very comfortable in the position, however as an improvement I would suggest that the training would be more thorough rather than just focusing on 'learning on the job', a lot of what I was trained in, I did not feel relevant when I began the position.
Working in a very busy branch for the majority of my placement did mean that some times, we seemed very overworked and understaffed, however as an individual, this has allowed me to develop and gain experience completing things where others haven't. This alongside a driven work ethic I believe has given me great success and job satisfaction.
I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement, and as the placement went on I was given more. This is something which I absolutely loved. Allowing me to learn on the job and develop as an individual gaining skills which without the placement, I would never of known I had.
I think the skills I have received from the internship are quality in progressing in what ever line of business I want to progress in from a career perspective. From sales to account management, customer service to fleet management, it has all allowed me to develop not just as a business person, but on a personal level.
The Company
Working in two different branches gave me the experience of witnessing two different atmospheres, from an extremely busy 7 day branch, to a quieter yet still busy 6 day branch. The staff all work extremely hard which can sometimes make the office feel slightly deflated however being a young and driven set of employees we always manage to make the most of the situations we were placed in and created a healthy working environment. I would say the in one of my places of employment it could do with some 'TLC' and improvement of the facilities.
I think the set up and programme of the internship has been fantastic in a sense of the stages of progression which an individual can make over 12 months.
I think the training prior to starting in branch can be improved, and from a personal perspective my initial three quarters of my placement I received very little training other than learning on the job, however since moving to a different branch, my eyes have been opened to training and learning things which excite me and have allowed me to progress as an individual due to my depth and understanding.
Company Parties/Events
I have spoken a lot to my area manager and other people with regards to coming back part time whilst at university alongside my last year as well as returning to a full time job after university depending on opportunity.
The Culture
Socials were great and regular branch meals allowed some down time with colleagues.
Nothing other than usual, was all fine.
Being local it worked fabulous, everything on my doorstep.
Yes, I got involved in several charity, social, and fundraising events.
