    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the placement, particularly as it progressed. I enjoyed learning so much about the energy & services industry, the intern community and working on interesting projects with all the experienced members of my team. I enjoyed learning new skills, such as communication, strategic thinking and managing upwards. Everyone I met from across the business was very friends, and the company seems like a great and supportive place to work.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued because they listened to my opinions, asked for my thoughts on work and also invested their time to aid my personal development. The team were also very welcoming and were keen to engage me in their work. I also felt valued by the grad community, and the supportive network in place to aid your personal development throughout the placement.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a lot of support and guidance throughout the placement. My line manager invested his time in my personal development, organising learning sessions for me and introducing me to a range of people across the business helping me to network. He also took on topics I wanted to learn about and skills I was keen to develop, and help to adjust work so that I would get what I wanted to out of the internship.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At the beginning of the placement, I was not too busy but throughout the place I had more work to get stuck into, which I enjoyed a lot more. Throughout the placement, there were very busy periods then not so busy ones, which reflected the dynamic of the team I was in. When I asked for more work I was given some; in the team were quite flexible around me and how I work, as I like to be very busy.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given some responsibility, which increased throughout the placement. Due to the high level responsibility of the team I was in, my own responsibility on my work was not very high but I still contributed to work going to senior management. Even though I did not have too much personal responsibility, I do feel though that I gained a good idea of the team's expectations as well as the expectations for the deliverables they produce.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The written and visual communication skills I have developed will greatly assist in my degree and particularly in my career. The exposure I received to experienced colleagues was particularly insightful and useful, and training I received was very good, organised by the grad but also individual learning sessions with my colleagues.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was friendly and hardworking, but also quite chilled, though this was probably because I was there over the summer when my team are not as busy. Sometimes it was a bit quiet and I would have preferred a more busy office environment.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was very well organised. I felt well matched with placement I was given, and felt the objectives of the role helped me to get the most out of the placement. All of the training the interns received was also well organised and a very good part of the placement.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I had excel and presentation training organised by the grad team, as well as individual learning sessions with my colleagues, such as finance and strategic consulting. I felt that the company as a whole, as well as own team personally, invested a lot in my personal training and development.

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Centrica seems like a very enjoyable and supportive place to work, and the grad scheme seems broad and very well organised.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • As all the interns were living in accommodation together, there was quite a good social scene in the evenings, a lot of sport together, as well as on the weekends.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cost of living was fine especially since accommodation was paid for.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife in Egham is just restaurants and pubs really. One would have to go to Windsor or Staines for a night out.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, there were opportunities for sport outside of work as well as things organised between the interns.
