    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship itself was quite fun, there were a lot of events and outings. We had a boat trip, went to London Eye, had a community day in which we did some gardening. However, the work was sometimes boring, but that depends on the team you were placed in and on the project you end up working on

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • the internship organisers constantly asked for feedback which was always acted upon quickly. Quite a lot of effort was put in organising interesting events every week. Ken Chenault (CEO of Amex) gave a talk to the interns as well which goes to show the level of commitment the company has to its interns

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had weekly catchup sessions with my supervisor in which we discussed my progress and plans for the upcoming week. My supervisor was very supportive and encouraging however he wasn't very involved in the project I worked on and didn't provide much guidance on the project itself besides the encouragement and cheering.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was generally not too busy. some days I barely had much work to do, but most of the times I have had a moderate amount of work to finish. the work is very chill and relaxed most of the time, which I did not find very helpful for me as I would prefer to work in a place that is more fast paced

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I've worked on 2 projects. On the first project, i was the only developer and was responsible for most of the project which was somewhat difficult and I had to constantly ask for help but rather enjoyable. The second project was more chill as there were other developers working on the same project and the work was split among us

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • in terms of technical skills, I've learnt new technologies and programming languages that would me land jobs more easily in the future. as for soft skills, Amex provided a lot of networking opportunities and encouraged us to talk to everyone we can and build connections. I'd say I'm more comfortable at cold approaching people and building connections after the internship

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • the atmosphere was very relaxed and laid back, the times were very flexible and you could take a break whenever you want and nobody would bat an eye or ask you what are you doing or why are you not working. People are friendly and easily approachable. Fridays were usually work from home days for most people in the office

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised. we had several events or talks each week, and the week always ended with a feedback session which was then taken into consideration for the upcoming week and adjustments were made to tailor to the feedback. overall, we've had a well packed 10 weeks full of different events and talks

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • 3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    National Travel

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • It really depends on what sort of job you want. if you want to work in a fast pace technical work environment, then this might not be the best place to work in as it is a financial company after all. However, Amex has been putting a lot of effort in improving its technology department, but it will probably take some years before they can catch up with more modern techie companies

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • we were a group of 12 interns and most of us usually hung out together in some weekends. we had some team building sessions in the first week and we were encouraged to stick together and socialize. apart from the interns there were some young employees who were also fun to hang out with and very friendly and inviting

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It was definitely not cheap, but also not London expensive. Transportation is costly. Rent was an absolute pain. As for going out, it depends heavily where you go, but the average meal and drink price was around 8£. Cinema tickets were around the same price as well. You can find cheaper places, but on average you'd pay that much. Also, a return ticket to London by train cost around 15£.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Brighton (3 train stops away from the work place) is where most of the employees live and it is a very good place for nightlife. there's all sort of pubs and clubs, and the streets are always filled. this city never sleeps. don't worry If you're not a nightlife person though, as there are many activities and things you can do in and around Brighton

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • we had an opportunity to work on a small side project with a startup based in London. It was voluntary so not everybody joined but I did and I found it very enjoyable and interesting. We tested a product for the startup and we later had a feedback session in which we discussed how it can be improved and what needs to be changed or added
