    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed it as it provided a challenging and dynamic work environment on a daily basis.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was placed in a very small team who were very familiar with one another - this proved difficult to begin with - but over time I overcame the atmosphere of feeling like an outsider.

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was excellent - He ensured I always knew what I was meant to be doing, aided me in finding extra work to take on and was available for one to one meetings whenever I requested.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Fairly busy at all times. I would say that you are expected to find your own work and therefore you can generally make yourself as busy or as bored as you like!

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given projects to complete independently on a regular basis. I hosted meetings and I was even sent out of office to conduct a branch visit and required to prepare a report on my experience. There was a high degree of autonomy.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The technology and I.T skills I have gained from my time working within the bank are invaluable. In addition to this, the knowledge I have gained relating to how large groups function on a day to day basis will be critical for a future working in the financial services sector.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was a serious attitude most of the time. This was due to the Restructure occurring at the time of my placement. In addition to this there was a significant number of senior members of staff on my floor - I feel this may have led to a more serious work environment.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Fairly well organised. The work itself was well organised once you go there. I did suffer some issues with HR before joining and throughout in relation to pay.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We were sent on QA Excel training courses - a very expensive investment when you consider how many people were enrolled on the Internship. In addition to this we attended many seminars and workshops about life in the corporate world - for example - how to get the most out of networking.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing - Both the Internships and the Graduate programs are very comprehensive. There is such a wide variety of programs, the pay is excellent, the value account is a very appealing aspect and I cannot think of a more interesting organisation to work for at the moment!

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I was placed in Edinburgh - there were about 20 of us up in Edinburgh and we socialised most weekends with the other Interns and Graduates.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Edinburgh is fairly expensive - but obviously a fair amount cheaper than London (pretty much all interns are placed in either edinburgh or london). The most annoying this is having to get the bus all the way to Gogarburn every morning and back to the city centre every afternoon. A bus pass is a must as £2.60 a day adds up.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Edinburgh nightlife was excellent throughout the summer - this is mainly due to the Festival being on all through my placement though.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Plenty - we all took place in a Prince's Trust fundraising challenge and this involved us conducting some fundraising and social activities outside of work on a regular basis.
