    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Placement was very enjoyable for the most part. Could of done with a bit more of job rotation instead of spending a year in one role. My role was very similar every day with the same tasks. I realised quickly i found project work more enjoyable so i got involved in as much of this as possible.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone was very happy to give time to the year in industry students. I felt valued at an early stage. The placement scheme offered a lot of networking opportunities and the company made me feel like a young professional from day one. My job role was also real work affecting the business, i was incharge of the whole supply aspect of Dental lines within the business, controlling a huge amount of stock and a big budget. Because of this i felt like a valued member of the positive healthcare team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • i changed manager halfway through the year and i don't think the right choices were made within the business about the management change for my development. I got given a lot of support in my first six months and then little after the change, which is when i felt like i needed it most, with my biggest aim being getting ou to the Boots graduate scheme.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Very busy throughout the placement. There was a huge amount to learn within my jobrole aswell as taking on exta projects throughout the year as part of the placement scheme. I enjoy being busy rather than bored, i think if i just worked within my jobrole for the whole year i would of become very bored but i was able to get involved in as much extra work as i wanted.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A huge amount of responsibility as soon as i joined the business. Buying thousands of pounds of stock on my first day. It was a really good feeling to be given such massive responsibility. Eventually the area that i had joined, Dental, had been put in my name and i was given ownership. This was a great change in responsibility.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think i have changed and bettered myself massively throughout the year. I think i have definately gained skills for life and i'm excited to use my new skill set in employment after university and in my final year of university. I think i've experienced a lot of positive and also negative aspects of working in a large busieness and i know what to expect and how to better myself even further in a job role in the future.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office atmosphere was very laid back. Everyone is very friendly and it makes working very easy as the atmosphere is so calm. The office is very open planned with a lot of places to do work away from your desk or to take part in meetings. On fridays the office would dress down which was something to look forward to.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I think the placement was extremely well organised. We had a timeline set up with what we were set to acheive without the year. Aswell as many events and sessions throughout the year to integrate and reflect as a cohort. The leaders of the work placement programme were full of energy and did a great job of guiding mu through the year.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • When i first joined the company i had a huge amount of training the understand the job role i had been placed in, this involved basic undestandings of supply chains, advanced aspects of retail supply and training to be able to use the many systems that Boots uses as part of their supply chain. I really valued this training and thought it was very beneficial.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The company informed us that there were no graduate schemes within supply chain to hand out this year due to circumstances within the business. Although i have been offered a level 6 role! Throughout the year though i have had a lot of exposure to those on the graduate scheme and and i feel like a graduate scheme is the direction for me, because of this i will be applying for graduate schemes at other large comapnies.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was regular meetups and sessions between the year in industry cohort which were enjoyable and allowed me to make some great friends within the cohort. In terms of socials expects amongst other fellow colleagues there was next to nothing. The most social part of this was taking part in cake and quiz on a friday.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived at home throughout my placement as i lived just outside of nottingham. Due to this living and socialising outside of work was very cheap and simple. Having lived near nottingham for a long time i do know that living and socialising in and around Nottingham is very reasonabal.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in Nottingham is really great. There is a huge student nightlfie scene due to there being two universities in Nottingham and thousands of students living around the area. Theres always a huge range of event on in and around the city with many great bars, clubs and locations.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I know about very little activities that collegues are involved in outside of work. I know that there are many football teams and casual football laugues througout the office. Football is very easy and popular outside of work as the Boots head office is opposite the Lucozade power league football centre, which is busy throughout the year.
