    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyewd this internship. I felt I have learnt a lot, not only about the work involved in the finance industry but general office environment. The team is very friendly and welcoming, daily praise giving meetings aid this. Furthermore, their willingness to help is extraordinary; even when busy on working day plus one, should I have a query they are ready to assist! Living in Bristol has also been a fascinating experience, one which I would not have had the opportunity to do so if I was not with Lloyds.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very valued. At no point was I left out or ignored, every single person was friendly and welcoming. When I was given work or completed it, it was met with in depth feedback about its content Whilst my work skill level was far from that of an experienced team member, at no point was I made to feel this was the case. instead, I was encouraged to ask more questions, try more challenging tasks and give a consistent effort, all of which added to my intern experience.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My desk was next to my line manager so seeking support was no hard task. As long as I asked for help, I got it. Even when busy, my manager would refer me to somebody who had the time to help me and I was never left 'in the dark' about what I was supposed to do. One place I could see improvement was that there weren't too many regular meetings to assess my progress- it was on a much more ask to get basis.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It varied day to day but I would say just over half of my day would be filled with pre planned activities, the rest would be filled either by the charity challenge, completing online training or shadowing various parts of the department. At times I found I was a little 'bored' in terms of having no work load but once I raised this issue, a member of the team would be on hand with a new task to complete. However, it would be a case of I had to ask for work from the beginning, rather than being set pieces regardless.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Not a lot of responsibility. Most of the tasks I completed were not essential or time restricted. This was in an effort to alleviate any stress I may have had with taking on responsibility, however I know I could be trusted with more. Given the nature of my department, they try to minimise the chance of things going wrong greatly and so having a new person put in charge of software that is vital for the infrastructure of the bank is not a wise decision I suppose.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • For the most part, working in an office environment has been the most rewarding for me, as I now know what to expect should I choose a similar career in the future. The online banking qualification available to interns was very useful and its content is something I shall take forward with me. For the most part, it was the social skills and presentation skills that I found most useful

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Really friendly, they're all here to help if and when I need it! From the first day I have felt welcomed by all members of staff, so much so that it has made this internship even better than I could have imagined. Little things such as being invited out for lunch and being included on the huddle board made me feel like a true part of the team. The office is quite relaxed but they get the work done, which is the most important bit!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was well organised on paper but a bit harder to execute in real life. Better communication between the emerging talent team and line managers could have improved this as it seemed there was a lack of understanding on what was expected from interns. The internship was still valuable and I learnt a lot but not exactly to the development process set out by the paperwork. This difference was welcomed by myself but I don't know if this was a standard across the country or not.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The FBS team really invested in me. We had skills sessions on presenting, honing your CV and even getting ahead within the company. I enjoyed these workshops as they were made specially for us interns so the content was tailored to our skill sets. Furthermore, my time spent on the charity challenge taught me many skills including planning office wide events, advertising appropriately and holding meetings with large businesses. This wide variety of skills is not easy to develop somewhere other than Lloyds as few places give such freedom to their staff

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I will definitely look to possibly taking a position here at Lloyds once my education has finished I would like to continue on with Finance, that is mainly due to the great experience I have had within this team. I would like to see where else in the business I could go as I don't want to close myself off to just one division but as a start, Finance seems like a great place to go.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes there was. We got on very well and went out together quite a bit. However, the accommodation for Bristol interns each have their own kitchenettes so there is little opportunity to meet and interact with other interns. the rooms contain everything you could need so it is possible for someone to not leave their room unless otherwise asked to. For some of the quieter interns this may have been the case as it is only a certain group of us that I see on a regular basis. I would hope no one feels left out.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The area is quite affordable, the one problem is that there aren't many large supermarkets near the accommodation so most of my shopping was done in a Waitrose local- not the cheapest place a student can go to! Clubs and bars were not too expensive and travel is quite cheap- I would suggest that if an intern was travelling out of Bristol, they get their tickets booked early as there is a steep increase in train ticket prices the week before the travel date.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The night life was decent. There are many places to go and the location of our accommodation was right in the centre of the social scene. There is something for everyone here, including things to do that don't include alcohol which was very much appreciated. The only comment I could make is that the clubs did not have people of a similar age to us, however we understand this is most likely due to the fact university has finished so students have probably gone home.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were a few opportunities to get involved outside of work. The Bristol pub rally was a great experience and helped us get to know our colleagues. I was away most weekends during the internship which is why I could not get involved with most outside activities but for an intern who was around, I think there was enough to do outside of work.
