The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at PwC. I was given a variety of work to day which was representative of the work that an Associate would do and which I found interesting. The scheme was well structured.
I felt very valued by my colleagues and was please to receive feedback that reflected this. I was given work that would be genuinely useful for the project teams I worked on.
I was given lots of support from management and supervisors. I have rated it an 8 rather than a 10 as it would have been useful on the first day in the office to have a tour of the building (but this is a minor point!). All supervisors were very willing to spend time explaining the work tasks.
In generally I had a good balance throughout my internship. There were the occasional days when I was quieter or busier but this is to be expected.
I was given lots of responsibility and was given the chance to work independently on tasks. I was trusted to carry out discrete tasks. Unfortunately I didn't get the opportunity to meet any clients and that is why I have rated it a slightly lower score.
I have learnt some climate risk modelling skills that will relate specifically to my thesis and I also found the excel training that we received very useful.
The Company
The general office environment was good and everyone in the office was very friendly and happy to talk about the work they were doing. Due to the nature of hot desking I felt it was more difficult to build a rapport with all colleagues.
The work placement was extremely well organised. On our first day in the office we had a resourcing meeting and were told which projects we were working on. If I had any down time during the internship, I emailed the resourcing manager who found be half a days/days work to do.
The general investment into me was good - I was pleased that we were offered excel training during the internship and I think it would be great to build on this in the future. I thought the two days in Windsor were very beneficial for meeting new people and getting an overview of PwC. However, it would be more beneficial if the workshops were tailored specifically to our business unit and taught us some hard skills.
Company Parties/Events
I would love to come back and work for PwC and was very impressed with the high standard of work that the team undertakes. I think that it is a create place to start a career given the range of work I could be involved with.
The Culture
The social scheme was good among colleagues. As interns we went for several drinks after work on a Friday and the team put on some 'welcome drinks' for us within the first week so that we could meet the team in a more informal environment. There were also several team wide drinks organised throughout the duration of the internship which were good for getting to know everyone.
The cost of living in London is high, however I have been renting here for the past three years so I am used to it by now! I wouldn't say that the costs around London Bridge are any higher than anywhere else in London! The canteen food was good but quite expensive for what you got!
I enjoyed going for drinks outside the scope on sunny friday afternoons although I cannot say that I sampled much of the nightlife beyond that!!
There were not many opportunities to get involved with activities outside work. Some interns took part in the JP Morgan 5km run. I would have been keen to get involved in a netball club if there is one in the firm although the signposting for this wasn't obvious!
