The Role
I really enjoyed my work placement as I was able to get experience in all types of work within corporate tax as well as experience in other lines of tax, including indirect tax, private client and international tax.
From my first day I felt valued by my colleagues as I was introduced to everyone in my team and a social event was arranged after work for us to get to know to know the people who we would be working with. Then throughout the internship I was invited out on numerous team events.
I heard from my buddy before my internship but after this I never received an email or any other kind of contact from him. However this was not a problem as the other buddy of the other intern from tax stepped in and acted as my buddy as well. In addition, my people manager was very enthusiastic and made it clear that I could ask him for help and advice with anything.
Out of the 6 weeks of my internship I was in the office for 5 weeks. Out of these 5 weeks the first 3 weeks were busy and there was lots for me to do. However in the final 2 weeks the amount of work assigned to me slowed down a lot, although I appreciate that this was a result of the beginnings of the summer holidays as well as most of the juniors (who were our main source of work) went to college for their exams.
Throughout my internship I was given a wide variety of tasks from simple printing and scanning to sitting in client conference calls. I felt like I was treated as a full time member of staff rather than an intern.
The training I received was not particularly relevant to my degree although some of the skills I developed were very applicable to my future career in general. The skills I developed include: working in a team to achieve a common objective, communicating with confidence, the benefits of networking with people from all over the UK and the rest of world.
The Company
There was a good atmosphere in the office as everyone got along with one another. It was clear that the team had worked together for many years, as people were always willing to help others even if they were not working on the same projects.
The work placement was set up very well. There was a 3 night residential in Windsor where we introduced to the firm and talked through the types of tasks that we would encounter and be expected to do. In addition to this we were given an introduction to the basic background information of tax. The following 2 days were spent in the office with the other interns where we were given a tour around the office and given an introduction to the computer system, as well as other admin tasks. The following week we were introduced to our people manager who was our first source of work and set the ball rolling.
I spent the first few days going over the different types of tax. Throughout my time at PwC I was assigned tasks which involved technical work, this was never a problem as I was talked through the basics to begin with and then asked for help if I ever got stuck on something.
PwC offers a wide range of opportunities within the firm. There is also the opportunity to be offered a graduate role after you have completed your 6 weeks.
The Culture
There was a good social scene with other interns being up for going for after work drinks if they were in the office. At lunchtime I would eat with other interns or members of my team. There were also corporate tax events and team lunches at least once a week.
I lived home during my internship so could not comment on living in the centre of Manchester. Cost of socialising was expensive but this is to be expected in a city centre.
There are lots of bars and restaurants in Manchester and within a short walks from the office
There were team events to get involved with every week from 5 a side football in tax to representing PwC at touch rugby at a 15,000 seat stadium.
