The Role
I enjoyed the internship a lot, it gives you a real insight into what working in the office is like and what work you will be able to undertake as a graduate.
I felt fully valued by my colleagues, they were all friendly and gave me interesting work to do. I wasn't treat as an intern I was treat more like a graduate which was nice.
The buddy system is great it makes sure you've always got one person to go to if you need any help. The people manager who is in charge of all the admin and your objectives was also great however I think there could have been slightly better communication between the summer internship team and people managers.
Out of the 5 weeks actually in the office, 3 weeks I had something to do all of the time which was nice as I wasn't sat bored. The other two weeks were slightly less busy but I still managed to find the odd piece of work here and there and there's plenty of opportunities to help you understand your line of service more.
I was given the same responsibility as a first year graduate.
The skills I have learned will definitely help me in my future career as quite a lot of them are transferable. The skills will not help my degree studies as such as my course requires quite a lot of time of independent study rather than working as a team.
The Company
In the tax office quite a lot of the senior staff were reasonably quiet, the associates were much more sociable and you could easily talk to them. The atmosphere was a positive one and made me look forward coming to work. There's plenty of opportunities to meet people in your office such as Friday coffee mornings, afternoon quiz and team meetings.
It was set up really well, you were provided with lots of information in advance so you could prepare. The 3 day residential ran without a glitch and was a nice way to meet all the other interns. There were two introductory office days so you got to know where you were working and who your buddy was.

The Culture
I think where your office is based helps with the social side. If you're based in the city it's quite easy to go out for drinks after work however if you're on a business park it's slightly harder for that to happen. However there are multiple socials and christmas/summer parties throughout the year so you have plenty of chance to get to know everyone.
I commuted from home so I didn't have to pay for accommodation but there rent prices aren't too bad in the areas surrounding the office.
The office wasn't based in the city so the nightlife was dead. However the city was only a 30 minute bus ride away so was if you wanted to go out in the evening you could.
It really depends on the time of year, summer is a relatively quiet time as people are on holiday so less things are happening. However, throughout the year there are plenty of different opportunities if you wanted to get involved.
