The Role
I very much enjoyed my placement with Michael Dyson Associates Ltd and gained valuable experience.
Throughout the placement, my colleagues treated me as any other member of staff, and not as a student. Therefore they would listen to my opinion on matters, and would delegate tasks to me as they felt appropriate.
Whilst my line manager was based out of the office for 2-3 days a week, my other colleagues at the office were available and willing to assist and support me when necessary.
Whilst there were peak times and quiet times across the year, on average i also found i would either have my own work to complete, or i could assist my colleagues with their work or with site visits.
I represented Michael Dyson Associates Ltd during site visits and at meetings, assisted my colleagues with preparing contract documents and prepared my own contracts and contract documents whilst under the supervisions of my line manager,
The skills i developed, the training i received and the experiences i gained have put a lot of my previous knowledge into context, and improved upon what basics i had covered in my studies.
The Company
As there was only 3 permanent staff at the office including myself (2 at the end of the placement), and 2 staff who split time between other offices, the office was often quiet, and i would often find myself alone in the office.
As there have been other placement students at Michael Dyson Associates Ltd before me, they were well prepared and organised.
They assisted me with my RICS APC and achieving my competencies during my placement, and i attended any CPD that the company had organised, as well as organising my own.
Whilst i have not committed my future employment to Michael Dyson Associates, i have had a good experience at the company and have discussed the options of future employment with my line manager.
The Culture
I was the only placement student based at the office, and due to the limited number of staff, the was not much of a social scene.
The office is based at Taffs Well, which is just a short train journey or drive from Cardiff.

The company put on a barbecue for all employees at its head office in Honley, Holmfirth, which i did not attend due to the travel required.
