    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • In terms of work it was slow to start with but as soon as I managed to get involve in a project, I enjoyed it a lot. The people at the office was also very friendly, which made it more enjoyable. However, due to the long periods of time without work, those days were far less enjoyable.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My Colleagues would value my opinions, even though I had a lack of technical experience. They also showed appreciation, when work was done for them as well as giving encouragements. I also felt involved during meetings. It helped that there are multiple graduates in my team who were more approachable.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Since I have worked at another office of the same company, I knew generally how the company operated, there did not need a lot of support and guidance. I was always given a lot of support and guidance when I asked for it. However, due to people being on leave/ holiday, I sometime lack guidance when I needed it the most in terms of project work.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to the timings I came into the project and project availability, work was scarce. My first few weeks were not busy at all, but when I managed to join a project I got more work and had the opportunity to learn a new software. As the timeline of the project went on I became out of work. I would have preferred if I got more work so that I could be stretched in time management.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility, which made me feel valued in the team. When members of my team went on leave I was responsible of the works I was working on. I was also given the responsibility to take care and guide work experience students for their week at the company.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I had a better appreciation of the discipline I worked on and a more insightful knowledge of how the office works. I learnt to use a specific software, which may not because useful in my degree, but will hopefully assist me in my career. I learnt more about the coordination of different teams, which would definitely help in my degree, when we have to do group projects.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Friendly and people were happy and enjoyed their work.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very organised in terms on human resource, whereby there was a lot of documentation to make sure I was taken care of, for example locations of emergency first aid work, as well as safety training videos. I also had to read the company's documentations which meant that I knew the ethos of the company. However, in terms of work lined up for interns, that was not very well organised.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Due it being a short period of time, not a lot of development could have be done. But, I did learn a lot in the aspect of work I was doing, and got to develop in continual Personal Development talks, which I attended often, learning different aspects of Civil Engineering.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I am sponsored by the company through a undergraduate scheme created by the Institute of Civil Engineers. So I am contracted to work as an intern during my summer holidays and hopefully, as a graduate after I finish my degree. I am hoping to join the company's graduate scheme as well.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a good atmosphere within the graduate and placement community, whereby everyone was friendly and approachable and they would often organise lunches together. All of the graduates and placement students, as well as the summer interns were like minded and so got a long with each other very easily.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I didn't live near the area, but the cost of living seems reasonable.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I didn't live in the area I worked.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are a few different weekly post work sports activities, which people at the office do.
