The Role
I did enjoy the job. There were some difficult times during the beginning and learning how to go from a customer assistant to a commercial manager because colleagues get confused as to your position. Therefore, I found it hard to ask others to complete tasks as they assumed the level of authority was different. I enjoyed visiting different stores as part of my placement and would have liked to have had the opportunity to travel around the country more to see head office and retail customer services.
At times, when visiting other stores, I felt appreciated. However when in others, I found that it can be easy to become a cog in a machine.
I felt supported by my line manager and an type of conversation was easy to be had about good/bad issues.
At times in the placement, I found that the individuals I was shadowing did not know exactly what I should be doing. It was difficult to shadow people for long periods of time as I sometimes felt like a nuisance. Later on in the placement when I had my own responsibilities, I was a lot busier and I enjoyed this section more.
I don't think I was given enough responsibility to have my own team and be a leader/manager.
I think it will help with many skills such as communication, management and negotiation. I was able to use my experiences in work to put forward in my university coursework during the year.
The Company
I got the impression that in retail, time is more valuably spent on the shop floor.
It was well organised
I was able to go on relevant courses which were useful.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Financial Bonus
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
There are many roles within M&S, not just the retail aspect.
The Culture
I'm glad I was with another trainee manager as we could talk about the same issues and help each other. it was easier to ask for feedback from a peer and just have someone to talk to.
I lived at home
Liverpool is great!
Not really.
