    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The work I completed at Pfizer was interesting, varied and supported university course content. I was given work that was both lab and office based, which allowed me to considerably improve my lab skills while gaining invaluable experience with computational modelling and report writing. I also had the opportunity to work in the pilot plant, so I could gain an appreciation of how to scale up a process.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • As I worked on current Pfizer projects, I felt like a valued member of the team and that my contribution was appreciated. I was able to present my work on multiple occasions and my colleagues listened with interest and respect. I was asked many questions about my work and felt the department were genuinely interested in my projects.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisor always tried hard to assist me whenever possible and was approachable throughout the placement, even when he was very busy. When he was unavailable, many other members of the department assisted me and were friendly and approachable on every occasion. In the office area I sat next to my supervisor, which was useful for ongoing support.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My supervisor ensured that I was busy throughout the year. I was given multiple projects, many of which I worked on simultaneously, so I was never bored and I never struggled to find work. Work was generally well managed, so I could work at a consistent pace throughout the year.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Most of the work I completed was related to current Pfizer projects, so there was a consistently high level of responsibility. I was trusted to independently work with external companies and acquire materials for lab work. I conducted experiments and associated analysis independently, while my supervisor ensured the work I completed was progressing sufficiently and using time effectively.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The most significant training I have received is the lab-based training, which has allowed me to design, conduct and draw conclusions from experimental work, in a safe and effective manner. I believe these skills will be greatly beneficial for my final year of university and my career going forward, as I would like to continue to work in a similar industry. The projects I have worked with have all had great relevance to chemical engineering, and the theory I have applied will be very useful in my final year studies.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office had a friendly and supportive atmosphere. If I had a specific question for someone, it was highly likely they would go above and beyond to assist me if their workload permitted. It would have been useful to have an overview of how the departments interact, with short introductions of the people who work in each department and their role at the company. This would be valuable for choosing a career path, as the department has many functions that are very interesting.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Everything seemed well organised and to run smoothly. My supervisor was responsible for all of my work related activities, which were well planned and resulted in a well-balanced, consistent workload. The initial induction period seemed well organised and I quickly understood the department’s function and responsibility. As above, an overview of the groups within the department would have been beneficial.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company provided me with lots of training, primarily relating to lab work so that I could conduct experiments safely and effectively. The training was mostly computer based, although some activities were led by a colleague in the lab. I was able to attend a conference at a university, which was an amazing experience.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would be very happy to return to the company, although graduate prospects seem limited. Colleagues generally seem very happy and fortunate to work at the company. In research and development, most colleagues seem highly experienced so I hope to return in the future once I have worked in the sector elsewhere.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • As the company employees 20-30 undergraduates and apprentices there is a good social scene. It would have been nice to have more opportunities to socialise with other colleagues in the department, although the arranged socials were very enjoyable.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived in Ramsgate, which was cheap compared to Bath where I go to university. It is however 6/7 miles from work, so the cost of transport should be considered. The bus is overpriced and infrequent, with limited discount offered with a bus pass. A cycle route is flat and off-road and runs directly to Discovery Park. Eating out was priced averagely, although there are many restaurants in Ramsgate to choose from.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Pub choice is limited, although the new Wetherspoons pub should somewhat improve this. The pubs in the area are relatively cheap, especially on certain days. There are no dedicated clubs in Ramsgate. Canterbury provides far better nightlife, although taxis are expensive and trains don’t run all night.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The number of company related clubs is very limited. I attended a badminton club, which was friendly and welcoming. Ramsgate and surrounding towns become more active in the summer, with many events over weekends. Opportunities over the winter period are limited.
