    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement here at Hays. The support and guidance from the start has been great. The 12 week training program prepared me for what was coming and allowed me learn and develop quickly. The responsibility given to me was great and I was treated the same as everyone else in the team.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The team was very friendly and welcomed me into the team from day one. I was given my own responsibilities along side my duties for helping the team. I feel this was a big factor to me enjoying my placement as I felt that I was valued equally to any other member in the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • From day one I always felt like there was someone to help and when I has an issue or the platforms were there that I could resolve the issue myself. My manager was very supportive in all aspects of the role and constantly gave me feedback along with constructive criticism which helped me massively.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This would largely depend on how many roles were live at that time. Weather it be my roles or the roles of another member of the team. If there were a large number of roles to be sources for I would be very busy as the marketing and sourcing of candidate for these roles would take up a lot of time and the rest of the time would be used to make business development calls. When there wasn't as many roles live I would still never run out of things to do as we constantly have to keep in touch with candidates and find new candidates while constantly keeping in touch with our clients.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At the beginning I was helping other team members with aspects of their desks. This would include sourcing for candidates and speaking to clients and getting meetings. A few months into my internship I was given my own 'desk' which was the housing market. This meant that my role was no different to anyone else on the team and I had the full responsibility of my own desk.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I believe that this internship has allowed me to develop my time management skills. Having to deal with strict deadlines and having to prioritise certain duties to others has really helped me. It has also allowed me to understand much more about finance roles. Having worked in the finance team placing finance professionals. It has allowed me to learn all the different positions in finance and what is required to fill these positions. Also seeing how a company is run from the inside on a daily basis has been very interesting.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was great. Everyone got on really well. There was always banter around the office and a lot of friendly people. It was still a busy, fast paced atmosphere that was thoroughly enjoyable. There was also regular meetings to ensure that everyone was meeting targets and growing the business.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I feel that It was very well organized. The training was all set in place with sessions off site in different offices to ensure that all the new starters were up to speed as quickly as possible and were able to run their own desks when required. There are always regular meetings and a schedule which is always keeping things ticking.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The 12 week training program was excellent. Hays invested as much in me as they would a full time employee. This was great as this allowed me to learn very quickly and develop my skills. There are also specific workshops that were put in place if you requested them or something new came about that you would need to know.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    Healthcare/Dental

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I feel that I would like to work for Hays again in the future. The progression structure that is in place is very appealing to me. It is very clear and has set targets for promotion. It is great to know that all senior managers and directors started from the bottom and made their way up. This would really motivate me to know that it is possible to go up the ladder during my career.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I would regularly go to the pub with people in the office after work for a few beers. We would occasionally organize for a group of us to go and play 5 a side football which was great fun to get the guys together. There wasn't that many work 'nights out' but that didn't really bother me.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Being based in central London the living costs were high and the cost of socializing was high. However, this was to be expected. I learned very quickly how much I could and couldn't spend and this allowed me to be clever with my money and make sure that I would have enough to last until the next pay day.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The night life was good fun. I had a group of friends based in London that i saw regularly. I couldn't afford to go out a huge amount but had a lot of good nights in with mates.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I always managed to keep myself busy.
