    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement was very enjoyable. It was great meeting people from all walks of life and working together as a team to complete various projects, tasks, goals and long term objectives. Having other students interning alongside me and fulfilling similar job roles was greatly beneficial. It meant that I could discuss any work related issues with people with a similar background to me.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt greatly valued by my colleagues stemming from the fact I was given a hefty chunk of responsibility that was welcomed by me. I was given the impression that my opinion was valued and that coming from an outsider’s perspective I could provide valuable insight. After being given adequate training I felt I could complete most of the work without a hitch.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was almost overwhelmed by the amount of support and guidance I was given by my managers and supervisors. Prior to starting there was an induction day where I was invited to office where I familiarised myself with my future colleagues and the particular teams I would be interacting with throughout my placement. I was also given a brief tour of various accommodation places that would I could rent when on placement.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was quite busy throughout my placement year at Mentor Graphics. I had my main tasks that I had to complete on daily basis which were a mainstay during my placement. However, I’d also collaborate with colleagues or work with other teams if help was required. As such another product needed some help prior to release with license testing and I was assigned to help. Various secondments and tasks off project kept me quite busy and ensured that I was challenged adequately.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a fair bit of responsibility during my placement. I had to create a feature that would be featured within the product. This allowed me to have a lasting impact when on my placement as it meant that even after I’d completed my placement work that I had completed would benefit those that would the product for a long time to come. Although it was challenging at times, the satisfaction of completing the feature was worth it.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I received a lot of training. When I first arrived I was given many tutorials to work through by myself. By completing these I was able to adequately familiarise myself with the product. After spending nearly a week at the office completing many online training modules and tutorials, I then spent an intensive three days at the Hampton Court Office where I was further trained on the product.
