    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have very much enjoyed every aspect (ups and downs) of my placement. It was a great experience.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were very friendly and genuinely nice colleagues who valued my opinions and supported me throughout my placement. One of the greatest aspects of this placement is the amount of responsibility given to Student Interns. This would give you the opportunity to perform and challenge your skills, such as working under pressure and meeting deadlines with high standard.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The support and guidance of my manager was absolutely fantastic!

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Workload was different each month as it was very much dependent on the work of the development team. Therefore, sometimes only little tasks are finished meaning that QA engineers would have little to test. Overall, there were times when we were too busy and there were times when we had little to do but at the end it will balance out.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The greatest aspect of this placement was the amount of responsibility on the student to deliver their best and apply their knowledge and skills in their work. This reflects how much confidence the company have in their student interns. As a QA Engineer intern, I was expected to work on my allocated tasks and present them to the whole team by the end of each month, which was a huge responsibility to deliver my best.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have developed a great set of skills, specially in communicating with others and IT skills. We received two training courses. The first once was a 3 days long course. It was a purely technical and related to the Engineering Products of Mentor Graphics. The second one was a one-day long course that is called DiSC which was mainly focused on teamwork and understanding others. Lastly, all current student interns were involved in interviewing the next batch of students for the next year which was a very pleasant experience.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was very relaxed and lovely. All colleagues are always happy to give a hand and help you when you struggle. We sometimes go out to the pub for lunch when there is a special occasion like somebody's birthday or welcoming new students. We usually have open discussions in the kitchen during lunch time.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was very organized in terms of assigning tasks to students. At the very beginning of the placement, you will be assigned some areas of the software to focus on testing through out your placement. Changes could happen during the year such as other products might need resources to execute testing plans and therefore, students could be potential options to be put on a different software for a short period.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As previously mentioned, the company provided a 3 days training course of their products at the beginning of the placement. They provided us with tutorials and manuals to go through during our first month so we can learn the software. We have been also put on a DiSC course which focuses on understanding other team members and methods of communicating with different personalities.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • There are good chances for students to be hired on a full time job after graduating. I have met 3 employees who were ex-interns. And during my placement, my manager was interviewing previous student interns for a new opening. Depending on the role you will be interested, if required, you will be put on a training course to cover all learning you need.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes the social scene was amazing. We were three students based in the office and we got along really well. We used to have lunch together, go out for dinner, watch a movie or play board games! We also had the chance to meet all other students in different offices and shared our experiences.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I worked in Nottingham. The cost of living was not expensive if you compare it with London area. Student discounts and offers are everywhere, Daily transportation expenses from Nottingham City center to the office and back was around £5. Trams are £1 per journey for students (regardless how many stops you pass).
