    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I found SAP's Software Development placement to be a really enjoyable experience. I really enjoyed the chance of meeting experienced team member's that were willing to help me. I was on placement for 13 months and i really enjoyed myself for the first 8 months with having a mentor. However due to consolidation redundancies happened and me and the other mentor lost all members of the team for the last 5 months. This was negative however i believe working on my own for 5 months has really pushed me to become a better programmer.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Looking back over the year the only time i felt valued when i had team members and mentors by my side. This gave me the confidence to challenge myself. Once the redundancies happened it felt as if the interns were pushed to the side and were there as full time members of staff rather than be classed as interns who actually needed help.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I have given 5 as half of my internship i was given support and guidance. If i wanted support and guidance once the redundancies happened i would have to wait late at night or a few days for someone to reply to me as they were based in the US.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Throughout the whole year we were challenged and at the start we jumped into deep end and got given tasks that would challenge us. We had a scrum board which we would work off and pick up whatever tasks we wanted to. We could make our day as busy as we wanted to.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Throughout the year we were given as much responsibility as we wanted. This meant we could push ourselves as much as possible. However when the redundancies happened we got given everything and it was our responsibility to look after the software and add features to it till the end of the internship

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I gained real life experience within the software industry and this will help me with my final year at university. Balancing more than a couple of pieces of work will help me throughout my final year. Having this experience at university and going into a job after will be a massive help.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • When everyone was there it was brilliant and i would have given it a 10/10 however because of the redundancies there was hardly anyone in the office and it was just me and the other intern at points which didnt help the working environment.

    2/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Again the internship was brilliant for 8 months and organised really well. I knew what i would be doing for the next two weeks. I also had time for personal development as well as having the chance to go down to london for training.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • For 8 months i was able to work on my personal development on a friday afternoon. This has really helped me for my final year as i was able to set myself up for the skills i needed for my final year at university.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • There is no opportunity for myself at SAP the only development opportunities that are available at SAP is outside of England. There is opportunities in Ireland, Germany and America. If there was a opportunity within England it would be appealing. I would defiantly consider moving countries for SAP knowing how big they are.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Having been based in Knutsford interaction with the other placement students in London. We weren't able to do anything with any of the other interns due to the 3hr drive down to london. This isnt SAPs fault as nothing could be done for about it. I'm sure it was much better if you lived in london.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I didnt live in knutsford however it is an expensive town and everything is the same price as london. Having spoken to the previous interns and knowing they lived in Knutsford it is very expensive. However there is an Aldi close by so that is a bonus for any student! There is a more up market shop called Booths in the town as well. Lots of restaurants and pubs.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Lots of pubs and restaurants. there is a lot of nice little pubs as well. Knutsford is really good for any age. There is pizza express and more up market restaurants that will cater for work party. There is a couple of bars however the town is only lively on a Friday and a Saturday night its quiet the other times.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I was able to go to the gym and do circuits on a wednesday. This allowed me to lose weight that was put on through first and second year at university! I was able to play badminton and squash with other colleagues until the redundancies happened. we even played pool and table tennis in the chill out room.
