    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I found the internship very enjoyable and helpful as part of my overall university experience. The staff within the engineering department are all very welcoming and since everyone's roles on a project have some overlap everyone works well together in one way or another. Roles within the department (especially the interns) are less 'defined' than expected resulting in being exposed to a wide range of engineering tasks and projects at various stages of completion. This maximises the experience gained as an intern throughout the year before returning to university or future work.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The interns are treated as any other member of the engineering department both by other engineers and other departments. There was no boundary between interns and other permanent engineers and everyone worked together on the same projects. When coming up with solutions to problems the opinion of the interns and other staff was equally valued and sought after.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There were regular talks with the manager about how the internship was going and if there was anything they could do to help or if improvements could be made. There was also lots of support given to professional development both to permanent staff as well as to interns working to complete competencies for professional accreditation. All members of staff were open to give support and were very approachable and helpful.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • As the interns are not hired into a single specific role within the department, but to work on a range or projects, there was always something to do and deadlines to work towards. If one project slowed down, then there was always another project to work on or another task to be completed. Although there was always work to be done, there was never so much that it became a struggle to complete.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The interns are given much more responsibility than I was expecting before I started, working on important tasks and projects right from the start. This responsibility increased throughout the year by being in control of more tasks and being more independent when working with people from outside of the department and even the company.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Gaining experience of engineering projects through various stages of progression really helped during my final year project. It allowed me to work in more detail at each stage and carry out tests with more rigour with the knowledge I had gained. It also showed how what I had learned at university could be applied in a real-world application.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Really good atmosphere in the office with everyone working together well and having lots of space to work. There was a good mixture of people in the office with a range of ages and backgrounds. This continued outside of the office into other departments as well as workshops and manufacturing areas.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The roles of the interns as well as the scheme overall had been running for a few years so everyone within the office knew how things were expected to run. There was however some slight delay at the start around the setup of computers & software but these issues were sorted and the interns are soon working well alongside the other engineers.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Lots of effort was made to give the interns as much experience as possible throughout the role from working on different tasks across the department to completing competencies as part or working towards professional accreditation. Time and resources were given to allow engineers to develop their understanding of the techniques and specialist software throughout the year.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    Healthcare/Dental

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Unlike large companies employing hundreds of engineers in one location, there is no formal graduate intake each year. Even without a job offer when leaving or a specific graduate intake scheme, I am still in contact with lots of people from the company about how I am getting on at university as well as keeping things open for future opportunities.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • As the two new interns overlap with the old interns for almost a month there is a relationship built here about how the role works and what is expected of them, this makes the start of employment much easier. All members of the engineering team were sociable between each other both inside and outside of work.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As I lived in Hove during my employment and that I lived with another working professional outside of student accommodation this meant that the cost of living was higher than I was used to but still not to the point where it was a worry with the intern salary. It also meant I needed to commute on the train which added extra cost and time.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I had limited experience of the nightlife around Brighton & Hove, but it was on par with what I was used to previously at university. I have no idea on the nightlife of Haywards Heath aside from the occasional visit to the pub but it is not far from Brighton or London if that's what you are into.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are plenty of activities to take part in outside of work around both Brighton and the surrounding coastline as well as up into London. Since the department is quite small and everyone lives in different places activities with work colleagues is mainly limited to a social meal or some drinks at the pub every so often.
