The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the placement, as I feel it's opened me up to vast amounts of experience, and given me the opportunity to enhance my skills. I feel that it's also given me a completely different outlook for when I return to University
Many members of my team were soon coming to me for questions and advice regarding areas of work I had been involved in, and also areas I have skills in, such as programming. This was a great feeling, as I felt like a valued member of the team, and that I was making a difference
My manager was always ready and willing to give support, guidance and advice on any issues or concerns I had.
My main tasks were projects set to me, which meant I was constantly busy but I often had to help fix problems on the factory floor, whether related to my skills or my previous projects. In addition, I found that my projects were constantly evolving, also with colleagues coming for help on their projects.
My projects were my own, and I was given full responsibility and trusted to complete them. I feel my manager had confidence in my abilities, which was reassuring and gave me confidence.
The skills I've developed I know will continue in later life, as I feel it's built upon the foundations my course has created massively. In addition, it has also opened up other areas which I may not have touched on if I had not undertaken a placement.
The Company
Often quite laid back, with there being friendly attitude amongst people in the office. It meant I was comfortable and able to approach people, whilst also openly talking with colleagues about work or even non-work related conversation. This meant I built friendships with colleagues, rather than just seeing them as work colleagues
The assessment centre was well planned, with my first few days going well in terms of my manager expecting me, contacting me beforehand etc. However, I do feel that I was almost thrown into work with little guidance. My manager was more than happy to help, but was often busy so I was left at times where I was unsure what to do/who to talk to. After settling in, it became easier but I feel if there was a better starter pack/introduction for placement students first starting I may have been better equipped to get on with tasks, rather than find out a few weeks after starting I still needed access to certain things.
Within a few weeks I was sent on a training course for specialist software, which immediately highlighted to willingness to train me
I would be more than happy to be offered a job
The Culture
Highly sociable with most other interns/graduates
N/A Did not live in the area I worked in - lived with parents and commuted
N/A - see above
Other colleagues often socialised outside of work, with the company also hosting sporting events such as football teams
