Film Catalogue Marketing Intern Review

Warner Bros. sets you up with such a good scheme it's hard not to enjoy your job here. With 50+ interns all starting at one time it's like a bonus year at university - you live with your friends, go out all the time and you're still completely broke. The interns form a network around the company so you always know who to reach out to when working with other departments. It's a massive plus to gaining a placement here. The level of support you receive from other employees throughout your job is fantastic, I never felt out of my depth with the work I was given as everyone is friendly and willing to help.

I work in a team of 5 and I felt my opinion was valued from day 1. Even though you will usually start the job with little experience, as a young adult fitting one of the demographics for the film industry, you can offer different insights and ideas to your team. People around the company are interested in what you have to say and will give you opportunity to present your ideas. The team often fed back to me on how I was getting on and let me know I was a valued ember of the team.

My manger couldn't have been more supportive. I had regular catch-ups just to chat about how I was doing and which opportunities I could make the most of. Day to day I felt comfortable asking my manager for help if I was unsure on something and he was always happy to not only explain but take the time to develop my skills in that area.

Like most jobs the business came in waves depending on which promotions or presentations were being worked on at that time. Some days I would work late (not against my will) to stay on top of work and some days I was able to watch upcoming films during the day, or leave early on Fridays in summer.

I was given an amount of responsibility that I felt comfortable with. Towards the start of the placement I was given a lot of responsibility considering my previous experience and knowledge of the company. When asked to research and plan promotions that would be used trade-wide I felt very valued by the team early on. As the placement went on my responsibilities increased but not out of my comfort zone. I maintained and distributed many documents that were used company wide - I would have liked to have been able to ask for more responsibility but admin workload increased a lot throughout my placement leaving me little time to think about long-term projects.

The training provided for interns included a session called 'project thinking skills' which demonstrated ways in which you can deal with a big work load and how to prioritize work in order to meet deadlines. This training will hopefully come in very useful in meeting deadlines for university. The general skill of being able to work for 9+ hours a day everyday without taking a nap will hopefully come in very handy on long library stints next year.

The atmosphere was very friendly and chatty. I sit in an office with 10 people nearby (and 600 others) so there is always someone to talk to. If you need to work to someone in another department it's the norm to take a walk and go and chat to them rather than send an e-mail so you're never too static. On Fridays morale is kept up with a drinks trolley and a quiz if you're lucky.

From start to finish the internship scheme is very well organised. Once you've received the news that you have a job at WB you're added to a Facebook page with all the other interns, where HR will organise a drinks meet up so you can find people to live with. When you start the job you have numerous inductions and activites to make you feel welcome. You're given a schedule of all the training you'll receive as an intern and introduced to all the opportunities to get involved with charities ect. You will receive regular 'CHAT's with your manager, which are basically a quarterly review of your progress, so you know where to improve.

The company were very invested - there are many full-time employees at the company who were previously interns, so WB recognizes the importance of valuing the current interns as potential future employees. Over training I have learnt how to manage time, present myself in meetings and come across as professional, amongst many other things. My manager has asked me on many occasions if there are any other parts of the company I would like to learn about or get involved in.

Although there are not as many jobs available as internships each year, I have met many employees who worked previously as interns. If you work hard it will not go unnoticed and the process of getting a job at Warner Bros. if you have interned there is far easier than if you have not.

The social scene was great. Every Thursday became an 'Intern night out' and every Friday was a struggle. A lot of placement students live with one another and become close friends over the year. A lot of interns have been on holiday with each other or visited universities. As well as interns everyone in the company is always up for a night out! Having Leicester Square/Piccadilly/Covent Garden on the doorstep from work is very handy for 'going for one drink then leaving'.

Student loan is definitely a must. The pay is good for an internship but you wont see half of it as average rent in London is £650-£700 a month. You can get by having a social life and going on a couple of holidays if you save but you will still be struggling to scrape the pennies together for that London £6 pint!

The nightlife is fun - there's loads of different pubs and bars in the area to try out throughout the year. People who have worked in the building for a while know where to go on which days for the all important happy hours that make a night out affordable!

There's a football league you can get involved in and a couple of opportunities to raise money for charity, but I would have definitely liked a few more activities outside of the office.
