    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • This has been an amazing placement and I have enjoyed every second of it. I have been exposed to all types of digital marketing from website, email, social media, remote interactions and much more. The people at MSD are super friendly and treat you like a colleague as oppose to a student. I have learnt so much from this experience and would highly recommend it to other students.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Immensely valued! I am treated as an integral member of the team and my opinion matters. I feel more than comfortable speaking up and contributing at meetings and am entrusted to train others in relation to my job role. My team and the company have always made me feel as a part of the company from the day I stepped through the door.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I have had constant support and guidance from my supervisor. Initially we had a one to one every week to check in and ensure everything was going well and things were on track. As time went on, my manager left it up to me as to how often we had catch ups but ensured we had a mid year and end of year review. If I ever needed any help in-between catch up sessions, my manager has always been on hand to assist and ensures I have a point of contact if he is on leave.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Extremely busy but in a good way! No one wants to sit at a desk twiddling thumbs or making coffee for the team and I definitely did not have to do that! I was constantly busy with different projects relating to different parts of digital marketing. I had an understanding that if I felt as though my work load was too heavy, that I could notify my manager and he would assist. I never felt as though it was too little or too much.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot! As well as supporting multiple channels, I was in charge of and led on the mobile channel and was fortunate to be able to introduce a new digital channel into the business. I felt as though the company high valued me as well as trusted me. I was given similar responsibilities to that of a full time permanent employee.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This placement has helped me to know what I want to do when I graduate. I am 100% sure that I want a job within the digital marketing sphere. I also am a lot more confident within the workplace, have improved my presentation skills, email etiquette, punctuality, ability to work to deadlines and much more! Definitely one of the best experiences I've had in the workplace.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Super friendly, very welcoming,. very warm. Everyone says hello when you walk into the office. It is an open plan office and the leadership team sit next to the relevant business units. Professional atmosphere with business dress however for men ties are not compulsory. Everyone talks to each other and it is very easy to make friends here.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I was the first placement student within the department I worked in and I must say it was organised very well! It was extremely structured and I was able to input what my personal objectives were and specific areas of interest, I feel as though I have been very lucky as I have had almost an equal say in relation to what I have learnt. There have been some compulsory elements, but those have been elements which I was already interested in.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company had me attend several training events - both company wide and smaller events. They invested greatly in my up skilling to ensure I was aware of the industry I was working in as I had no previous knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry. I was also fortunate to attend international summits to connect with global colleagues around different workstreams that I was involved with.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. If given the opportunity I would definitely choose to work at MSD. The company is amazing and has an array of opportunities inside and outside of the UK. I feel as though I have made some strong ties and connections and intend on keeping them whilst I am back at uni. I have also managed to gain a focal topic for my dissertation from this placement.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Great social scene- about 20 placement students, all meet up before starting, can arrange to live with them, pub outings, go visit different countries together, have lunch at work together, carpool to work. Definitely a strong network for you to be a part of if you choose. Extremely supportive when it comes to other students and colleagues that live locally.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living in relation to pay is manageable. We were paid on a weekly basis and worked out to around 300 p/week so you need to manage your money to ensure rent can come out. Rent was about 500 p/month so there was more than enough money left over to socialise. Really close to London so there is lots to do and the local area has a lot of good restaurants and pubs

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife is okay in the area. Very close to Hertford so would recommend going out there more so. Extremely close to London which has amazing nightlife and something for everyone. Easy transport links so you can get back and forth with a lot of easy. Definitely a prime location for placement in terms of close to London without having to pay London prices.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Lots! There are many clubs, whether it be football, rounders, yoga or other activities. Sometimes there would be social parties, dinners, lunches. A lot of different things to appeal to all people. Everyone is super friendly so you will always feel as though you are included. Many opportunities to get involved outside of work.
