    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship. The work was very well varied and I got to see all the different aspects of what a job in Corporate Tax would involve. From start to finish people within the business were always looking for ways to facilitate the best experience possible for me and helping me to learn, and I look forward to joining as a graduate in 2017

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued by colleagues and I felt that everyone within the business was very understanding and helpful. From first year analysts to partners everyone was happy to hear your opinions, and were keen for me to get properly involved. Also, people were happy to take time to properly explain things to me and develop my knowledge of Corporate Tax issues.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Regular meetings with the two "champions" was useful in answering all questions that I had during my internship. Also, the buddy scheme also gave me a contact to whom I could ask advice from on a day-to-day basis. Also, I felt that the champions and buddy did really care about making sure that my internship was the best experience it could be.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It fluctuated over the 6 weeks which is to be expected. Some weeks I was quite busy and had a lot of different pieces of work going on, and others were quieter, however, when I was quiet people were happy to find things for me to do. The best parts of the internship were when I was busy, as in 6 weeks you want to get stuck in to as much as possible to really see if this is something you want to do in the future.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a fair amount of responsibility during the placement as I was allowed to go away and take ownership of many tasks. However, I felt that people were still happy for me to go back to them and get their advice and help. I think the right balance of responsibility and guidance was given, as too much responsibility on an internship could be quite daunting when you have only been at the business for a short period of time.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think the skills developed will be beneficial. I learned to properly manage my time, prioritise those pieces of work that are most urgent, and how to best interact with clients. Moreover, some of the more specific skills in Corporate Tax will also help me in the future when I return for a job, such as using Onesource.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone was really friendly and upbeat. The office was buzzing with activity .Everyone hot desks which gives you the opportunity to get to know everyone in the office There's always someone offering to make you a hot drink and I felt very comfortable. The atmosphere was perfect to work in but at the same time, I felt comfortable chatting to my colleagues.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Well-organised. However, maybe there should have been more events planned for times when there was not work (i.e. talks from employees, mock client workshops. Overall It was very well organised.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • People were happy to take time out to help your development. Maybe some seminars would have been useful to help me develop some more and learn some more specific areas within Corporate Tax. The induction process involved some training, but not that much of it was overly useful, and it would have been useful to have been given more Corporate Tax specific training at the induction event.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I received a job offer. I will start as a graduate in 2017 and there is a clear career development path within the firm. So the scope of getting a full time opportunity is good after you finish an internship.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, some Thursday we had socials with both fellow placement students and colleagues which help integration into the firm and allowed us to get to know the other people in the firm. We also had a couple of lunches with people from within the department which again helped to successfully integrate placement students within the firm.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Newcastle is a fairly cheap city - I lived with my parents, and other living costs aside from rent are cheap! Price of beer is probably half the cost of London..

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Newcastle is very well known for its nightlife. There are plenty of bars, pubs, clubs and shows to attend every day of the week. If nightlife is important then you'll never be bored in this area - Newcastle probably has the best nightlife in the UK outside of London with something to suit everyone.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The charity football tournament was the only opportunity, however this was because of the short duration of the scheme. I'm sure that if I had been working at Deloitte for a bit longer there would have been more opportunities!
