Corporate Communications Intern Review

I have absolutely loved my time at Warner Bros. and with each month I have felt even happier and more comfortable within my role. Even in really busy weeks I have felt supported and valued enough to make it as enjoyable as possible as everyone around me doesn’t just see me as an intern but as an intrinsic member of the team.

Honestly I couldn’t have asked for a better team around me, they have been a vital support network during my professional development and have coached and taught me so many things I will never forget and couldn’t have learnt otherwise. Not only that, they make me realise I play an important role for the company, and they also feel like family and are so easy to get on with. It has made coming into work every day a pleasure.

I have been effectively mentored by my two line managers all year - we have only had one formal feedback session but upon reflection I could have definitely asked for more direct feedback and guidance. I know that if I felt unsteady or like I needed some comments on my performance I could have asked for more but I am happy with the level of support I have received from my whole team this year.

I have experienced a perfect balance of busy and calm periods during my time here. Neither of these last too long at any one time - you can be rushed off your feet sometimes which makes the days go by incredibly fast but it is all very exciting work. This has especially been during company events my team has organised, so its very hands-on and enjoyable. Quiet spells have also been great for catching up with other non-urgent tasks, so overall it has been a perfect balance.

I run the staff intranet site, which all UK staff have access to and use for most company-related information - I use my judgement to post relevant news stories, film trailers, competitions and loads more. I have also become a seasoned wordpress user from doing this. Other than that I have had a lot of independent writing tasks throughout the year.

As for my degree, I have hugely improved my work ethic - it feels like I have more hours in the day and I know I will take this back to uni with me and work harder in my final year. As for beyond this, it has been a completely invaluable experience that has taught me professionalism, communication skills, and just generally given me an insight into a career in the industry I want to work in.

I have had so much fun this year with my colleagues, not only in my department but in most of the departments across the building. This is partially from knowing an intern in each department, who quickly become a support network and give you a link into each team. My team have been so fun to work with and make each day enjoyable.

The internship as a whole has been incredibly well structured by the onsite HR and Learning and Development team who have run various training sessions throughout the year to help our personal and professional development, which has been really useful. It is finished with a review of the year and CV help for beyond our internship.

As mentioned we have been trained throughout the year in everything from presenting skills to personality tests. You can tell the company care about you personally and want you to develop as a professional. There is a sense of personal training throughout the whole year as you are constantly picking up new things and your team will involve you in everything, which in a sense is an investment in itself.

There are a lot of ex-interns in the business, so people even on senior levels who started their time doing a placement year. You will find the more people you connect with on your year at WB the more chance of getting back into the business as if someone in the team looking for a new recruit already knows you and likes you, you have more of a chance getting back into the business.

I have made friends for life with so many of this year's intake of placement students. Most of us live together in houses or flats of anything between 2-6 or so people and we all spend a lot of time outside of work socialising. Being in central London we have also never been short of something fun to do after work or nice places to eat during lunch breaks.

London is generally pretty expensive so it may be different to uni towns but you will be earning a good wage so you can comfortable afford rent, bills, food and still enjoy your time in London. You can get into bars for free usually and there are often really good happy hours to look out for. You can get 4 beers for £10 in some places, two cocktails for £8 and wine for £10 so its about looking for somewhere before you go out if you do want to find something like that.

The nightlife anywhere in London is always going to be good – being very Central it has been great and you are never short of bars and clubs that are suitable for all budgets, music tastes etc. There is plenty to do even if you don’t like clubbing like cool cinemas, markets and pop ups.

There were plenty of opportunities - I have regularly attended film premieres in Leicester Square as a guest which has been really amazing and it has been a great perk. I have done a lot socially with my team and other interns, and have also got involved in two separate volunteering days using charity leave allowance which every WB employee gets.
