The Role
I enjoyed the placement a lot. Primarily because I had a chance to apply the knowledge which I gained during my years at University. It also gave an opportunity to gain an insight into industry and see how things work in real life. This placement improved me as an engineer and also as a human being.
During my placement I was not feeling as an intern. I was treated more like a professional engineer and valuable asset to the team rather than a student from University. I was always able to ask for help and advice and was never pushed away or looked down on. I believe that my colleagues were also able to learn, unfortunately, not as much as I learnt from them.
The support and guidance was available most of the time. However, this placement, I would say, focused more on developing independent working skills and teaching how to take responsibility and lead yourself. Supervisor was really helpful and caring, trying to improve my human qualities and growing me as an engineer.
The first couple of months were not very busy and were mainly spent learning the basics of the engineering side of the business. However, when the time was passing I was given more and more tasks and responsibilities. In my department, it was a working practice that each engineer would usually have several tasks at the time which would keep them busy and allow to interchange them to avoid routine. It also taught how to prioritize tasks properly to achieve highest working efficiency.
I was given more responsibility than I expected before the placement. I had a chance to deal with suppliers, customers and managers. I was given important tasks which kept me busy, pushed me learning and improve as an engineer. I believe that was a valuable part of the team which helped the company in a positive way.
I am pretty confident that skills like time management, tasks prioritization, team-work and many others skills that I have learn during my placement will be used in my final year at Uni. The next year Uni modules I selected a few weeks ago are largely based on the information and knowledge I gained during my placement year. Also by meeting wonderful people and bright individuals helped to widen my social network which will be useful in the future career.
