    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship offered a structured programme, where I was able to balance a variety of work. I was able to attend external events outside of my job, which gave me a greater understanding of the impact of my role in the wider industry which was motivating, whilst providing me opportunities to build on my professional network.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was empowered to take on many key projects independently and I was asked for my feedback on any upcoming future projects, even if they didn't directly fall under my job role. My opinion and feedback on projects was then incorporated in to the next strategy, which made me feel highly valued and passionate about the work I did do. I also had weekly meetings with my colleagues, and was required to feedback on progress of my projects, which was great as I was given support and help if required.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had weekly meetings with my line manager, which consisted of checking up on my well-being, to ensure I was on track with my projects and if I required any support from the rest of the team. My manager also made sure I wasn't over-worked and that I had a good balance between my job role and any additional skills/ personal development projects that I wanted to take on. I was also a part of weekly meetings with the wider team, who also provided support for any projects that I struggled with.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was fairly busy each day but I ensured that my day was spread out evenly. I would check my emails and complete any pending short tasks in the morning and I would typically use the afternoon to work on projects. Somedays, I would use the afternoon to work on any personal development projects that I wanted to take on to improve various skills. I was given the flexibility to work from home on some days of the week, which helped to save time and energy from travelling to work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was empowered to take on many various projects, including leading on projects with external agencies. I was also encouraged to attend external events to represent Siemens, one of which required me to present on a panel with other leading female representatives to encourage over 300 young females to pursue careers within technology and engineering. Altogether, these events helped to boost my confidence and become more passionate about my job role and field of work.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The Siemens Internship Development Programme includes a structured list of modules which you take on. These modules cover various skills, such as how to present effectively in client meetings, how to take on unexpected questions in presentations and writing effective emails to achieve your end goal, how to network and organise your career etc. These modules helped to not only improve my professional working skills, but they also helped me to save more time and become more organised with the type of work I dealt with. I was also given opportunities to build on skills which I regarded as weaknesses. I am now returning back to university as a more confident, organised person, with effective presentation and data analytical skills and a strong professional network!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was very friendly and everyone would check up on you to ensure you felt a part of the team. The office was decorated and there was lots of free snacks available, especially on occasions such as birthdays and Christmas. Occasionally, we also had motivational speakers/senior board members such as the CEO giving presentations and you also had the opportunity to network with them afterwards. We also had several choirs playing during lunch time to create a more relaxed atmosphere!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There was a structured internship programme, which included fixed learning and training modules to take on and you were informed about these well beforehand. You also had the chance to be apart of many CSR activities day and company parties. During the time that I joined the company, Siemens was undergoing several changes and so many projects arised which weren't originally a part of my job role. However, I took this as a positive as these projects were very current and exciting.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was encouraged to build on my skills which I regarded as my weaknesses, through being continuously given the opportunity to be involved in various projects, attending specific skills training module sessions and attending external industry related events. I was then also given opportunities to showcase what I had learnt from my training modules through the projects that I was given and presentations to the rest of the team.

  • There was many opportunities to take on CSR activities outside of work or during work. There is an internal volunteering portal, which informs you of all the upcoming CSR activities during the year which you can take part in! I was encouraged to take part in many external events relating to our industry and job role, which helped to build on my knowledge of my job role and improve my networking skills. There were also a few company parties and socials happening outside of work which you could take part in. Several other interns were also apart of sport teams.
