    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed the work I have been given to do and the opportunities I have had while here, including a secondment to a nuclear power station for six weeks and access to training which will help me progress a career in the nuclear industry. I have also had the chance to spend some of my time volunteering which has also been very rewarding.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The team and many others I have met during my placement have been very welcoming and helpful in getting me involved in various tasks. I have been given the opportunity to use and expand on skills such as writing reports and analysing data. However, as an intern there is a limit on my knowledge and a limit on the type of work I can do for the team which was to be expected.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was very keen to let me take control my placement year which was great. I spent six weeks at a nuclear power station and have completed many training courses which will help me pursue a career in the nuclear industry. He was also very supportive in making sure I was neither over-worked or under-worked.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • From week-to-week my work load varied but generally it was about right. There were definitely some busier times and some quieter times. I did not feel overly pressured with my work load. My line manager checked up every so often to make sure i had enough (and not too much) work to do. If I found myself with little to do after completing a task i would ask around and usually find a new task to work on.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As an intern I was given relatively little responsibility. However, I did take control of my own tasks such as assigning deadlines for reports and data analysis which helped in organising tasks I had been set. I couple of the tasks I was given involved setting up meetings or completing an assessment. These did have set deadlines which I was responsible for.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I believe to a great extent the skills I have developed in the past year will help me with my future career within the nuclear industry. I especially appreciate the amount of training I have been able to complete during my placement which will be key in a future position within the company.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was fairly relaxed but very work orientated. Everybody was friendly and very helpful which meant it was easy to ask for advice from colleagues who were usually happy to discuss the topic in detail if need be. Although the office was not quiet for the majority of the time, conversations were predominately work related.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • very well organised.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt the company invested quite heavily in my development by my own instruction. This was helped by my line manager who understood my desire to pursue a career with EDF Energy. I used this year to develop my skills, knowledge and qualifications which was achieved by undertaking varied work as well as attending key company training courses.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?

    Above 25 days holiday

    Healthcare from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I applied to the year in industry placement scheme with the intention of hopefully going on to work for EDF Energy afterwards. After completing the year I still very much would like to pursue a career with the company and will begin a new position within the organisation later this year.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The young professionals network (YPN) was a great way to get to know other placements/graduates/apprentices/new starters with various activities during lunchtimes or after work. As a long distance commuter I did not take advantage of the evening social events but did enjoy the regular lunchtime lectures and career events which were organised. The many volunteering opportunities also were a good way to meet other colleagues.
