    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed/am enjoying my time at GE Power Conversion Rugby. I have enjoyed feeling like a valuable member of my team on various projects, given really valuable experience I can take back to university. Rating: 9/10

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • From day one I have been made to feel valuable here. People were very patient to start with and not too expecting. It's been a really nice work environment to be in. Rating: 9/10

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager has been superb to me throughout. Always there to help no matter what. He has been supportive of my extra curricular activities such as volunteering schemes and training courses. I am a much better person and employee for him. Rating: 10/10

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My days varied. Some days have been hectic while others slower paced, however these slower paced days allowed me to plan for my busier days, so it has been the perfect balance on the whole. Rating: 9/10

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Especially in the second half of the placement, I have been given a lot of responsibility. After 6 months I was running my own project and carrying out essential work on other projects. I definitely didn't feel like an intern after the first few months. Rating: 9/10

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It will help me no end. I have learnt so much, including practical skills that I will keep forever, as well as theoretical knowledge that will help. Being here has made me understand the theory work much easier as I have been able to apply my knowledge to real life scenarios and built on it that way. I have used loads of computer software like Ansys which will develop me as an engineer leaps and bounds. Rating: 10/10

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes. There were 12 interns and we were kept quite close knit. GE enrolled us all in a group project in which we volunteered at a local disability school to renovate a piece of land from unused/derelict into an area they could play. Rating 10/10

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Fairly expensive in terms with what I am used to. But I think that's down to the area of the country being southern and everything here is far too expensive. The north is much more reasonably priced. Rating 5/10

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Not great but that doesn't appeal so much to me anyway. Rugby is a fairly small town. Has lots of pubs which is great! Rating 7/10

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes plentiful. Like I said GE put us through the volunteering scheme at the schoo. We were also invited to 2 corporate dinners and a couple of outward bounds activity days. Rating 9/10
