    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my time at GE. The culture at the company was great, I was able to get involved in many different projects across many teams and continents. I went in with a 'Yes-Girl' attitude and it took me places! A GE internship allows you to explore various project opportunities and get involved in as little or as much as you would like to.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My team was great! As in any organisation as large as GE, I came across a couple of people who really saw me as an intern... but generally I was treated as a well informed member of the team. I was able to make a name for myself and this got me good exposure among the team meaning I was highly valued.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I knew my manager was there whenever I needed her, but generally she took a hands off approach. I am quite a self sufficient person so this worked well for both of us. If I had needed more support and guidance I always knew where to turn to and she always made time for me.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I love to be busy! I said yes to any project that came may way, which sometimes meant I was a little overwhelmed. It was hard to figure out my priories by myself, but my mangers did help me with this (although only 6 months in when I was quite literally drowning!).

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility. I was given ownership over every project I worked on, and any process improvement suggestions I made where taken on board and often implemented. I started my own tasks and projects which I was very much left to run by myself. I always knew where to turn to if I needed help, but generally I was self sufficient, managed my own time and handled my own workload. So long as I was getting the job done I was pretty much left to it!

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My degree didn't overly relate to my placement so there are no direct skills that relate to my studies. However, I learnt many skills such as: email structuring, dealing with managers, time management, prioritizing, working in a corporate environment, interview skills, and general people management.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My office was particularly dull. By the end of my internship there were only 2 of us who went in regularly and so I mostly worked from home. This worked really well for me and meant I could be very flexible. However, it would have been nice to be in a more sociable environment. When people did come in, it was lovely! Lots of chatter and catching up.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I was involved in organizing the program for next years internships so hopefully it well get even better next year! There was a strong intern community, despite being located in 26 different locations across the UK. There were always things to get involved in to work with other interns on other sites, however it was fairly rare to get to travel there due to varuous travel expense bans

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I went on a couple of training courses but I don't feel as though they invested a lot of time or money in my development. Had there been less cuts during my time I think there would have been more opportunities, there are GE courses running all the time, both online and face-to-face

    2/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    National Travel

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

    Healthcare/Dental

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • My Internship was extended by 3 months but there aren't loads of opportunities beyond that as I must return to University for my final year. I would say the prospects are a lot better if you come into GE as a graduate as you are much more likely to be offered a permanent position. Watch this space to see what happens after I graduate!

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was quite a good scene but I lived a little far away to get overly involved. I was always very busy every weekend so couldn't get involved in many night s out etc. Generally there were things happening but compared to other sites we didn't do a lot. I would say this varies dramatically depending on the cohort and location.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It was very expensive! My site was just outside of London so had almost London prices without the London wage. General the salary was enough to get by on, you could easily save some money if you were conservative and didn't book too many holidays!

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Very poor, but that was mostly due to the place I chose to live in!

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were some opportunities, I think there were more in other sites.
