    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement with Hays, I have had opportunities within the business that I never thought I would ever receive. The culture for Interns at Hays is another huge benefit. Not only are you considered and treated as a valuable employee you are also given the opportunity to get involved in and learn as much as you want. My team have been fantastic during my placement year and have helped me to get fully involved in how recruitment works and given me guidance every step of the way. My manager has also played a large part in my enjoyment of my placement. He has not only been there to learn from but also given me every opportunity to succeed.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • As mentioned above, I felt during my placement that I was integral part of the team, given respect and guidance every step of the way. I had such a fantastic team, where I never felt that I couldn't ask a question! Earning your respect from your team is very important in recruitment, making sure that you earn this allows you to help broaden your chances of placing candidates in other colleagues jobs.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager is without doubt the reason why my placement has been as enjoyable as it could've been. He has given me every opportunity to develop and succeed and given me helpful guidance along the way. When struggling with tasks I know I can always rely on my manager to help me out and give me everything that I need. My director has also been there to help me out and given me valuable guidance whenever asked. Something that I thoroughly enjoy about Hays was being able to sit next to my manager and also in close proximity to my director.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was very lucky to join Hays onto a warm desk, this allowed me to continue to develop the desk and be busy daily. Alongside my desk and being busy talking to clients, it is also taken up by meeting candidates and registering them. I have never really not had a busy day at Hays, if it wasn't sourcing for my own jobs, helping out colleagues sourcing for the their jobs is also a large part of the role.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At first I was very shocked at how much responsibility I was given and learnt that as an intern you are given the same job role as someone at a graduate level. Although at first it was very daunting, it has soon been something that I have been very thankful for and thoroughly enjoyed throughout my placement.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills that I have developed during my placement year will help to aid me throughout my career. I have not only learnt key skills about recruitment and interviews, but I have also grown in confidence and experienced opportunities I would never have done if I chosen to do a placement. Time management is a huge part of recruitment and I hope that this skill I can implement into my degree study.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There is a very competitive and friendly atmosphere in the office, with everyone striving to achieve targets. Everyone spends a lot of time on the phone so there is always a buzz around the office and a lot of noise! The office atmosphere is very welcoming and inclusive of everyone, whether that's from having a quick chat in the kitchen to some laughter round your team pod. A lot of people are heads down and hard at work a lot of the time, so the atmosphere is always to work hard and reach targets.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was very well organised and easy to get integrated into quickly. Being set monthly KPI's and targets allows to continually achieve and strive to bet last months amount. Having a chance to sit down with your manager at the end of every period allows you to develop upon last months achievements and improve for the next.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was invested in every step of the way on my placement, whether that being from going away for specialised classroom training to individual one on one training. The most training we received was learning how to deal with daily recruitment issues and given guidance as to how to deal with these issues. After all of this time and training you feel far more prepared to tackle anything that is thrown at you.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The future prospects that Hays have to offer is exactly what i'm looking for in a future career and organisation. Hays makes it very clear on the progression routes available to you and how one would go about this. In the future there is potential to earn uncapped commission which is a very appealing prospect that Hays has to offer.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Amongst the placement students I have been luckily enough to have become good friends with a hand full of them. Alongside this there is a very social scene amongst everyone, with after works drinks every Friday all the way to celebratory parties. The social scene at Hays is where you really make true friends and get to know everyone on a personal level rather than professional. The social aspect is what I have thoroughly enjoyed and something I believe is a very important aspect of any placement.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is a very expensive area to live and social in. Making sure that someone is aware of this before taking on a job role in London is very important. Someone people I believe on placement have hindered themselves by not having factored in this before moving or taking a job here.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife in London is incredible, offering a full variety of places to go. This is a massive bonus about London as it allows for variety and change of scenery on every night out. Another bonus is that nightlife can be a bar with music all the way through to a multi floored night club.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were always activities offered outside of the workplace, the one that I participated in the most was the netball, This was a fun way of getting to know others in the business and I have enjoyed playing this every Monday. There was also boxing, yoga and other activities available.
