    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall I have enjoyed my work placement. I have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel to numerous places in the country to meet clients, along with traveling abroad for a European team meeting. I have also met some great friends that I will stay in touch with for life!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I did feel really appreciated by my team throughout my placement. The team will always say thank you when I have completed a piece of work. Although my team are based all over the country I was lucky enough to attend regular team meetings where we would all come together and see each other and socialize. I feel I got on with my team extremely well at both a work and personal level.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My task manager was rarely at the same location as me due to the nature of the job and all of the traveling, however was extremely responsive whenever I sent an email or needed a call, and was always happy to help and is someone I knew I could go too with questions. My colleague that I worked directly with in the office was always happy to help and did not make me feel out of my depth, whereas I was challenged at the same time.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to the nature of the job, the workload was very unpredictable! Some days we would be snowed under and have to stay an hour or so behind at the office to complete work, and other days there would be very little to do. This would be completely dependent on the number of deals that had come in. We tended to have very busy periods and very quiet periods. It can't be predicted but that is the nature of the job!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The amount of responsibility I was given varied. Sometimes I was given a very high amount of responsibility which included working and communicating with clients regarding sensitive and confidential information. Throughout my placement I accessed this information and was trusted with it. Other times job that were seen to be out of my reach were given to colleagues.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My technical knowledge has greatly increased and is something that I will definitely be able to apply to other jobs and working life. Working in a professional and corporate environment is something that I will also be able to apply to other companies. I hope I will be able to apply my work ethic to my degree studies.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office changed from day to day. When it was busy in the office the atmosphere was great, I could speak and communicate with other members of the team and discuss work. Certain members of the team are very lively and it was great to work with them. Activities were also organised throughout the year including a festive themed day at Christmas and a fun olympics competition in the summer. Department meetings were also made into an event and included food etc. However, when it was quiet and many people worked from home it was very quiet and subdued in the office. It was never a tense or nasty environment it could just be a bit dull! This is why I really enjoyed going to client sites and visiting other places.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Really well. The induction at the very beginning of the placement in the London offices was really inspiring. We had 3 month, 6 month and 12 month reviews where we discussed progress with our managers. Careers events were set up throughout the year for the interns, and opportunities to network and do work outside of your daily job role were always available. The communication for grad applications was also well done.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I attended a lot of client sites throughout the first few months of my placement and I believe this accelerated my personal development in terms of being independent and adaptability. I also was able to travel overseas to the European team meeting which was an amazing opportunity for me to network and experience other ways of working in other countries. Careers days organised for the placement students included presenting to others, and a particular one that sticks in my mind is presenting to the UK HR Senior Leadership team within the first two months of my placement at the London offices.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • National Travel

    International Travel

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • There are future employment prospects within the company but not in HR. The roles are fairly general. Graduate roles are available and it is easier to get a graduate job internally through IBM rather than externally due to starting the process earlier and having experience however I believe the number of jobs available are quite small.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was around 35 interns at the company. We did a lot of things together at the beginning, however this died down about halfway through the year. Some of the interns did organise things such as Christmas meals and end of year events. It could be quite cliquey but I think this is always the case with a group of young people.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived in a student area and therefore the surrounding shops and pubs were fairly cheap. My rent was a reasonable price

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • It was very really fun at the beginning because it was a new place, however there wasn't actually that many places to go too.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not really, or maybe I just didn't really look into it enough. I did play for the company hockey team though.
