    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed it! My team were friendly and everyone was approachable when I needed help or even when I was just curious about a particular process or industry relating to our team. I went on a couple or informal and organised socials with my team which were a lot of fun. The recruitment team only organised a social for the interns in the first week and half-way through, so something at the end of our placement would have been fun, nonetheless we organised something ourselves.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very much so! I was regularly given feedback on my work and was often invited to meetings purely for my insight, as well as to those related to my assigned projects. For one day of the internship I had to be in another city for a hospital appointment. The team accommodated my request to visit the local office while I was away, and put me in touch with team members over there so I that had projects work on.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Anyone that I was ever doing work directly for was always very approachable, and preferred that I asked questions rather than doing something wrong. When I expressed my preference to get experience in different areas within Reward, my councillor helped me arrange time with different teams. However, more communication with Recruitment throughout the internship would have been helpful.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I rarely stopped! The team were always busy so appreciated any support I could give to their projects, so I had to manage time and expectations so that I could deliver on all that I had committed to. I was always asked if I had capacity to take on more work before being given it. A slower pace may have been more comfortable but it was manageable, and any time that I stayed late was my own decision to maximise my breadth of experience by accepting more work, rather than pressure from others.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was never directly responsible for any particular project, which is understandable as an intern. However, there were smaller tasks within projects that I was solely responsible for, and projects would have been delayed had I not delivered on these.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The people skills I developed will be useful. The ability to communicate positively and efficiently with a team that are constantly balancing priorities, while remaining professional is an essential skill in any profession or study. The tax knowledge I gained will not help in my degree but will of course be useful when I return to Deloitte as a graduate!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in the office was good, everyone got on well and made effort with each other, always being friendly and polite. Some days could be quiet as colleagues would be out the office at Client meetings or in the London office.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was well organised. I spent 3 weeks in Corporate tax, 1 1/2 weeks in Global Employee tax and 1 1/2 weeks in Value Added tax. Events throughout the internship was also well organised. The only organisational issues I encountered was for my graduate scheme interview, both with organising my interview date and giving me my interview result, both took over a month. However I think I was an anomaly as all other interns interviews were organised very well.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Colleagues kindly spent a lot of time over the six weeks teaching me concepts and explaining projects I was involved in. Before and after Client meetings they would take time to explain anything I didn't understand. They were always happy to help! Our first day was an induction day which went through the software we would be using. The firm also provided training sessions for us.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • This year all interns at Gatwick were offered a Graduate interview, with a likely outcome of a job offer. We got to choose which department in Tax we wanted to apply to, we also had the option to apply to a different office. I applied for Global Employee tax at Gatwick and received a job offer starting next year!

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes! The internship started with a night away in Solihull where we got to meet all the other SVS's throughout the country, which was really fun. We had other events organised for us throughout the six weeks, including a day out in Brighton, meal outs and quiz nights! Meaning I had the opportunity to meet the interns in the Audit department, and got to get to know my colleagues outside of the office.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I live only 30 minute drive from the Gatwick office so this meant I could live at home. Office is situated in Crawley which is a relatively cheap area in Sussex.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There is not much nightlife in Crawley. But you can always find some good pubs and restaurants around.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Our team had a sports afternoon one day, where we went to play rounders before heading to some bars. The team also have free drinks in the office lobby once a month. I was told that there were a few sports teams but I didn't investigate these in my time there.
