About You
The experience was very pleasant and useful. All of the employees were very welcoming and tried to be as beneficial as possible. Many events were scheduled throughout the day so not a lot of time was spent doing one thing. This made the program interesting and gave us a better view of how large the company is and how their are many different graduate work opportunities available.
Many people allocated times to meet with me within their busy schedules. No one rushed through their meetings with me and tried to be informal and relaxed. Employees almost always treated me like their younger sibling and gave me tips to surviving university life and applying to graduate roles as well,
Plenty of guidance was provided during the program. All my hosts for the discovery days spent almost all day with me and arranged for me to meet their colleagues in different sectors to help widen my perspective. Workers from HR who organised the event ensured everyone's safety when we traveled to the company's offsite location on the final day and helped us if we ever faced any problems.
The program has truly given me a better understanding of what a graduate job in BP might involve, Additionally, some of the problems that engineers had to handle involved topics that I was already taking in my course that I had previously struggled to determine their relevant use in the real world. Additionally, I was given workshops that improved my interview and public speaking skills,
The Company
I felt the program was well structured. It gave us an insight on the first day to what we will be doing and the structure of the company. Moreover, the last day had us prepare a presentation explaining what we had learnt throughout the project. That allowed us to truly understand the vast amount of information we had received during the program.
Very friendly and welcoming. I was able to network with a number of people during the program. Additionally, a very wide variety of tasks were organised for us to do every day which kept it interesting. Also, some employees were very excited to meet us and came to the campus to meet up with us and explain their work to us.
Their was not enough time for the company to properly train us. Albeit different sessions were given to train us for interviews and how to prepare for them. Which was reinforced with a mock interview on the final day. Moreover, guidance was given on how to structure presentations in the future and how to properly engage the audience with the topic.
Most of the time spent in the company was done work shadowing different roles in the company. Each employee spent an hour with me explaining the type of work they do and showed me pictures and videos to further help my understanding of they kind of work they do. Albeit, as most of the work was too technical only brief comments about the overall project were given. Since I would not have understood the actual data handled.
Very much. We were reminded every day about the five core values of the company and how they play a part in every job done by the firm. This went all the way down to the office setting which I was situated in. For example I was always reminded to hold the handrail whenever using the staircase or to always cover cups with a liquid with a lid to avoid them being spilled,
The program has greatly improved my perspective of the creative thinking that goes into extracting oil and gas. As they continually get harder to find and extract. This made the work very interesting and possessing a very small portion of routine tasks. Overall, a career in oil and gas is definitely one of my top priority careers that I might consider further down the line.
Everything Else
around 380 pounds as a compensation for my travel and accommodation costs.
I met a very large number of people in such a small period of time. Each working in a completely different area of BP. This allowed me to network with highly senior professionals whom which I would not have been able to meet otherwise. Not to mention that we were encouraged to always set up connections with whoever we meet, and everyone was very welcoming when asked to keep in touch.
Plenty of opportunities were their for networking either with company employees or even colleagues who were also doing the insight program. As in the first day we were invited for a dinner which proved to be a great socializing event and made me truly get to know and set up friendships with other people doing the program.
Many activities are available for employees to do during their free time either during the day or after work hours. As the campus which the company is situated in offers many opportunities for outdoor activities. Examples include an outdoor sports center available for all employees and after work sporting clubs and societies.
Definitely would recommend this program to a friend. As it gave me the opppurtunity to meet with a very large amount of people and even students from other universities. As well as improving my perspective of the size and type of work done to extract oil and gas. And made me better understand the technicalities of how oil is extracted and the problems that might arise and how engineers must design their work around them.
