    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • This experience has been very beneficial as CMS had prepared a variety of tasks, talks and workshops to partake in over the course of the week. I also had the opportunity to interact with and learn about many different departments, which helped me to confirm my career choice. Furthermore, I was able to network with many of the friendly staff who welcomed me into the firm.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I feel that the firm were very accommodating for young students, which made the experience a lot more positive than others. The employees spent a lot of time to explain about the firm and the tasks, which made me feel valued, considering that I was only their for a week.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • The staff were all very approachable so I felt comfortable with any queries I had. Also, there was a lot of effort and enthusiasm put into the setting of work so there was not much need for guidance.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The greatest benefit that I will take away is my decision of the specific area of law that I wish to pursue. Additionally, I have gained a broader knowledge of the practice areas and the mannerisms and etiquette expected in a firm of this size.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • It is a well structured programme that has clearly been considered carefully to allow students to benefit the most from it.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • It was evident that the working environment was a very friendly and happy one. Nothing was too much trouble and the work experience students were treated the same as everyone else.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • When taking into account the short amount of time that I was there, the firm had invested a great deal in the recruitment process with similar requirements to those for vacation schemes. Furthermore, whilst at the firm they had arranged many workshops and seminars to improve skills such as presenting and negotiating. Additionally, they had arranged social activities outside of the office, which were a nice touch.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • Working with the employees on a day to day basis gave me an insight into their work. Also, speaking to trainee solicitors informed me of the reasons for their decisions to choose CMS so I had a well rounded view of the firm.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • Having researched the company previously I had a good idea of the firm's culture but during my experience I grasped a real idea of what CMS stood for. I also created a presentation on CMS for the first steps programme and so I researched their culture further, with the help of the team I was working in.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • Following overviews from many departments, I was able to establish which ones I would enjoy more based on factors that aren't usually considered without talking to professionals already in that role.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Due to the full schedule over the week I interacted with many employees working in legal and non-legal areas and at different levels. Therefore, I gained a lot of connections and confidence in talking to professionals through this experience.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • A social night was organised for the middle of the week which allowed interaction with other departments in a more relaxed atmosphere. Lunch was also arranged within my department, as it was my birthday, which was a lovely touch.

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • There seemed to be a lot of social opportunities within the team but more specifically for the trainees.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • This was a very valuable experience that, not only looks fantastic on your CV but also, helps you to grow as a person and confirm your own career choices. This is definitely worthwhile for anyone considering a law career to get a feel for a firm and I will definitely be looking for further opportunities to work with CMS.
