    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I enjoyed the insight very much due to the unique access it allowed me to have to the workings of the firm as well as the trainees and solicitors. I enjoyed working along side the team and being able to see what kind of work they do and how they go about it.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I was made to feel incredibly valued in terms of the type of work which was passed on to me from being my buddy who was a trainee solicitor and from solitons in the team themselves. Partners were also very engaging and eager to get me involved and see what they were doing.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • I believe I was given the perfect amount of guidance and support which allowed me to solve problems myself and make an attempt at the tasks given, whilst not proving too much guidance that did not allow me to work around issues myself or provide too much support. It was the perfect amount for a learning environment.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The knowledges and skills I gained from this placement will no doubt help me in my studies as well as applying for summer placements and traineeships. Especially given that I had not previously studied Intellectual Property Law at university, I believe I was able to learn about it in a practical way that will help me around theoretical study at university. Moreover, the skills I developed whilst carrying out tasks will prove invaluable in future for applying to law firms.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The first day of the insight was structure very well with workshops, inductions and training. I know what was happening exactly when. The following four days in the department were less structured, however given the nature of work this is understandable and also provided a realistic environment of how lawyers days are structured.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • I felt the general atmosphere was fairly relaxed but also hard working and busy. Everyone was very friendly and willing to help, but also committed to working. The team as a whole got on with each other well and worked together all the time which made it easier for me to get involved and see how the team works.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm clearly invested a lot in us in terms of the negotiation and presentation skills training that was provided to us on the first day. This was incredibly helpful for not only that week but will come in handy in the future. Moreover, the firm provided us with a buddy that will keep in touch with us. Therefore, I believe the firm invested a lot in me and my future.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • Working along side a trainee was helpful in understanding what it is like to work in the firm, in that specific department. The trainee provided lots of advice and answered many of my questions about her work. Having this direct access was a the perfect insight. Further to this, all the other members of the team including solicitors and partners were helpful in answering my questions too and allowed me to see what they do day to day in their roles.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • Being able to work within the team for four full days allowed me to easily see how the company functions and how everyone interacts with each other. The culture of the company is that of a friendly and kind one that promotes client service through everyone working together to provide this. I believe being placed directly into a team amongst all the people involved in the company provided invaluable insight.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The tasks that were provided to me by the trainee were the exact tasks that she would be carrying out. This allowed me to see exactly what kind of work I would be doing in the future and being able to do it allowed me to see how I would perform at it and assess whether it would be something I would be interested in.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • The firm paid us very well for the week which made it worthwhile taking time of work if it overlapped. Moreover, I was placed at the Edinburgh office despite living in Glasgow, but the firm were very kind in reimbursing the cost for the train journeys.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Yes, many opportunities.

    5/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • There were social events after the first day, a lunch mid week and a social after the last day. At every one of these were opportunities to talk to trainees and graduate recruitment and ask any questions and find out further information. Further to this, working in the department all week was also an opportunity to meet other employees and network. The atmosphere was very relaxed and sociable which made networking easy for everyone.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Employees were keen to tell us about the activities they all get involved with outside work ranging from sports to drinks socials. There are also numerous sports clubs for men and women and many of the trainees were involved in these.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • I would definatly recommend this insight to anyone who is looking for an insight into a law firm and what life as a lawyer looks like.
