    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed the flexibility as it really eased me into working life with the amount that we could work from home and flexitime. However, I never felt challenged or that the job related to my degree. I did learn a lot about a new industry though will be useful when transferring skills to new job roles.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I did feel like my role made a difference to the office and people relied on me a lot. However, as a homeworker it was difficult to build a good relationship with colleagues who weren't in my direct team. My work was often recognised by senior management though for improving efficiency within the department.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • As my team is extremely small and consisted of only 2 people including myself it was difficult in the beginning to be given support when my line manager was annual leave for most of my first month in the company. However, I do feel as though whenever I was struggling or needed some guidance I could go to my manager and he would set aside time to assist me.

    2/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It differed each day. Some days I would have back to back calls from 9 til 4. Other days I would just send out emails and work on projects. During quieter days I would ask for work from other departments and my role then developed into being an intern across two different functions. Towards the later half of my placement was when I found myself being consistently busy. Initially though there were a lot of quiet period during my placement.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Being in a team of only two people meant that I had a lot of responsibility. I was surprised at the level of networking my role required and I had regular calls with global teams for projects to help make big decisions. Also my role made a big impact on the department such as improving the induction process for all new starters, developing a new system for team quiz nights and helping deploy new software.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt a lot about new technologies which I can use in my university work and in future job roles. Additionally, my time management, communication and organisation skills have vastly improved which will most definitely help with university work. In terms of knowledge gained from my placement though I don't think any will help me with assignments as my internship was not related to my university degree.

    3/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Whenever I was in the office the atmosphere was always relaxed within my team. It wasn't a stressful environment and office stalls were open so communication with team members was easy. On days when we had events like the Olympics the office would be extremely fun with games at different stations and people would dress up.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Not very well organised. In terms of job role it took me about 4 months to understand what my job actually was. I didn't have my intern induction until 3 months after starting, During my first week I didn't have my laptop until day 3 when I was supposed to get it day 1. Additionally, during my first month my manager was out of the office/on annual leave for 13 out of 20 days. All admin work was readily available and no one seemed to understand the onboarding process for interns.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had a three day induction with QA which helped us understand about team roles and how we fit in within teams. We had to regular undertake online training which aligned with company standards. We also undertook Lean Sigma Six Yellow Belt training which developed our efficiency with everyday tasks.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • It seems that I have a graduate job waiting if I wish when I graduate however I think will do my masters and then decide what kind of grad scheme I want to complete. I don't know what career I want yet but the Atos grad scheme is available to me as a plan b.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • As a homeworker it was difficult to be part of the social scene, especially as I didn't live close to the office. However for those who did GIA's organised sports clubs, nights out and general drinks after work on several occasions,
