    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The job I career out is interesting as is the equivalent to roles carried out by full time members of staff meaning that I have real responsibilities. There is always opportunities to get involved in other activities as well as your core job role which is great for experiencing other areas of the business. The work-life balance is great and Intel care about employee happiness which also makes the role very enjoyable and the move to another location easier.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The work that I do is appreciated by other members of staff. I am treating in exactly the same way as other full time members of staff meaning that I feel valued and respected. There is a very welcoming atmosphere and everyone is happy to help if you need guidance with the tasks you are carrying out.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I have received a great level of support from my supervisor who is always happy to give advice on tasks that I am working on. Rather than just being given something to do or a process to carry out, my manager and supervisor have always emphasised the importance of understanding what I am doing, why I do it and what impact it has on the business. This attitude has been great for developing and gaining a broad understanding of how the business runs. If I make a mistake I typically get constructive feedback afterwards to help develop myself. Additionally, I will also always get praised for times where I have done a great job.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • During the ramp up I into my role I had spare time. This was good to begin with as I was still getting to grips with the role that I was taking on. After a while I felt that I wanted to take on some extra work to fill up my spare time. I spoke to my manger about this and I was able to take on additional responsibilities within another team which has been great as I have had a good level of work to do and I have also gained experience in more than one area of the business.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I have been given a very good level of responsibility within this internship. I am responsible for my own work and have my own role which means that the tasks that I carry out have high importance and need to be carry out and have a good business impact as a result of doing so. My colleagues have always been understanding of the fact that, as an intern, you have very limited experience which has meant that additional responsibilities were given to me as the internship commenced. This meant that I felt comfortable with the responsibility that I had rather than having too much or too little. If you have the desire, there are always opportunities to take on more responsibility.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have a better understanding of how a large company works are the type of work that takes place which will have a positive impact on my degree studies. I have been able to use my experience this year for a university placement module which is very beneficial. The experience I have gained from this internship will have a great impact on my future career as I have been exposed to several situations such as presenting and communication as well as the use of software and exposure to multiple business processes.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Happy atmosphere within the office. Very welcoming and sociable group of people within my team. Typical attitude of employees was positive with drive to develop and work with integrity and to a great standard. There is a good balance between working hard but also enjoying the time you spend at work.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very smooth hand over period due to the overlap between old intern and new intern. This meant that I was able to learn my responsibilities with the help of an experienced intern who has been carrying them out for the past year. We had lots of training sessions on top of this to get to know the business products and the tool that we would be using throughout the year. Perhaps a little too much of this early on which meant that it was hard to take in the information that I was receiving.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I have been supported in areas where i have wanted to develop myself such as presenting. When I have had opportunities to present I have had good levels of guidance prior to presenting and good feedback afterwards. Multiple opportunities to do training courses throughout the year, both online and classroom based. I was also allocated an on the job coach who mentored me throughout the year to help me develop within my role and on a personal development basis as well.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The culture of the company is great which would appeal for a future employment. The amount of opportunities are limited and there is a very low variety of graduate roles offered which is a shame. The location of the company is not as appealing for a future role.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Great social scene amongst other students and colleagues. There are lots of interns around and we have our own sports and social committee who organise social events through out the year such as nights out, pub quizzes, sports tournaments and a weekend away. The social scene with colleagues is good, lots of young members of staff who are all very friendly and sociable outside of work.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cost of living is low in the area that I am in. Rent for houses in Swindon is reasonable and bills are also lower compared to other places that I have lived in. My intern house is close enough to not need to drive/get bus to anywhere i.e. work, town, train station.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife is not brilliant here but it is okay. lots of bars and a couple of clubs with many young people living here and a young workforce making nights out enjoyable. Good for casual drinks and for nights out. Also a good location for travelling to other places such as Bristol, London, Bath and Reading.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There is a sports and social club which offer discounted tickets to all sorts of events such as concerts, sports matches, cookery lessons. Subsidised gym available which is right next to work so very convenient. Lots of clubs and things to do in Swindon such as mini golf, ice skating, trampolining and much more.
