    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Although I have enjoyed working for Intel, unfortunately the job description did not paint a clear picture of the role that I was given. However I have been given many opportunities to support events and other members of the team with projects that appeal to me more. Additionally, I have thoroughly enjoyed being a member of most of the intern committees. This has given me opportunity to support the teams and thrive in my own projects for them.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I have been very lucky to work with a team that has made me feel very welcome from the outset. My role has been flexible in so far that I have been able to work collaboratively with many members of my team. These opportunities have made me feel very valued as each idea I have contributed has been rewarded.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager and I try to meet weekly for an hour to discuss the progress of my tasks and provide me with support on any issues with the role. Although these meetings are focused on specific tasks, I know that she would be there for me if I ever had an issue, as would other members of the team. In terms of guidance for focusing my role to my degree, this does not exist.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Within my job role I have many tasks that I am responsible for which is where the predominant of my bandwidth is. Fortunately within the placement cycle each task had a busy period whilst the others are quiet, therefore it is very manageable and has given me opportunities to jump onto other tasks when other team members who were busier than myself.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During this placement I have been given my own job role and tasks which I am solely accountable for, which has been a great amount of responsibility! In addition to these daily tasks, I have also been given a role within projects that my team are working, which has been a great opportunity!

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Although the skills I have learnt are not focused on my degree or the career path that I would like to follow, they are transferable. I have greatly developed my excel skills as I work in this format daily, which will be incredibly useful in the future!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere is very relaxed and particularly evident with the formal/causal attire that the staff wears. Also the open-door policy and group cubicles creates a very team feeling environment, which is great!

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The overall process was very smooth, from the Assessment Day, signing the contract and attending the Open Day I felt very confident before I arrived for my first day at Intel. However, at the Open Day I still did not know what my job would entail and neither did the team or the intern i was replacing!

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • At the beginning of the placement, the company was very focused on delivering presentations to welcome us to the business; providing an overall direction and outlook. In addition to this, we had compulsory online training to complete within our 5 week transition period between the Old and the New Intern. Since then there has been limited requirement to complete training, but software and webpage access had to be renewed after 12 months.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Intel has a lot of Graduate roles available, especially to those who have already been interns! However as a company Intel is very focused on hiring internally, so job recs are desired to be filled within the company rather than externally!

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Definitely! There are over 45+ interns in the office I worked in, which means there was an amazing social scene! It honestly felt like a smaller university community but where you knew everyone! Additionally, most teams have regularly team events which are always fun too!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was lucky enough to live back at home with my parents for the year, but the average rent price was around £450. House sizes range from 3 bed to 6 bed. The price of socialising is very reasonable too!

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There is a good nightlife in the local town, it has lots of pubs and two nightclubs. Many themed nights out work well too! Also there are many cities nearby which are very easy to get too!

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The intern community is very strong at Intel and has many committees, such as Sport and Social (SAS), Charity, Intel Inspire and more! I was fortunate enough to be able to a member of most of these committees and this gave me great opportunities to learn different skills such as planning and promoting events and a Intern weekend away! Also I was able to travel to Madrid for a work event with my role!
