    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I really enjoyed the insight. On the first day we were given an induction with a number of skills sessions which I found extremely helpful. We were given a workshop on how to deliver an effective presentation which was delivered well and we were given the opportunity to practice delivering a presentation with differing levels of confidence which really helped to determine what a good, confident presentation looked like in advance of our Academy Assessment presentation at the end of the week.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt very valued at the firm, even though many of the people I worked with in the Employment section were extremely busy, all of them took time out of their day to ask how I was getting on with the work I was set or how I was finding the Law course at university.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • I received much guidance and support from my trainee buddy, who always made sure I knew what I was to do before leaving me to do a task. I was also able to email both of the contacts we had in the Grad Rec team at any time and they replied very quickly, answering any of my queries.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I will be able to use the presentation skills I learned at the firm induction day for the remainder of my degree and beyond during my future career. The other induction presentation about negotiation contained skills that will be useful, not only in a working environment but also in everyday life.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The insight was very well structured, there was a clear plan laid out prior to the week. The induction day at the start of the week was a very good insight into the firm and was a great opportunity to meet all of the other CMS First Steps students. It was also good to have the presentation at the end of the week as this allowed me to adequately prepare for it and complete research.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The general atmosphere was warm, inviting and relaxed, despite the fact there was much going on in the firm during the day! The people in the firm were all very welcoming and always prepared to answer any questions I had during my time there even if they did have a lot of work on.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm ensured that we all had a SurfacePro the same as everyone else in the firm so that we got the full experience of what it would be like to work in the firm. Furthermore, we were also given email accounts to ensure we could be contacted within the firm. They also provided skills sessions for us to ensure we were adequately prepared to go into the working environment.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • As I said, the firm provided us with SurfacePro's and email accounts as though we worked at the firm. Furthermore, we were given legal work which would be similar to what we were given if we were a trainee which gave an idea of what a full time role would be like there.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • This insight helped me to decide that this is what I want to do in the future as it gave me an idea of a working week in a law firm and the sort of cases that would I would be working on as a trainee if I were to do a seat in Employment.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • On the first night we were taken for dinner and drinks with the Grad Rec team and some trainees, which allowed us to ask questions we had about the scheme and what it was like to be a trainee at CMS. We also met a number of employees whilst working in the office during the day and could ask them any questions.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • 5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • At various social events throughout the week we were able to ask employees of the firm about opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work such as the 'CMS World Cup' and also there were a number of emails which were circulated through the week which detailed activities that you could get involved in.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • I would recommend this insight to a friend as it is the only type of its kind for such an early stage in the Law degree that allows you to get a realistic idea of what working in a law firm is actually like from day to day and see the type of work you may be given as a trainee in the future.
