    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the internship. The work was varied, the hours were flexible and my team were super friendly to work with. I would recommend this internship to anyone with an interest in events and marketing. It was a perfect length as well - 3 months. There was also plenty of opportunity to receive feedback about your work.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued by my colleagues. They asked for my input in team meetings and took on ideas I had. They also offered to include me on extra activities they were involved in such as promos at leisure centres, PTPP in local communities, course walks and meetings with stakeholders at the Manchester Forum.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I always felt comfortable asking for further guidance if I was ever unsure. Weekly 1-1 meetings ensured I always knew the work I was expected to do and could also ask for help if needed. In addition every 6 weeks I had a review meeting with a mentor who was helpful in discussing extra skills I could learn and experiences I could partake in to enhance the internship experience. There was a personal development plan to support me which I filled in.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I spent about 20 hours per week completing tasks for the internship. It was very flexible as to when I completed the work. There were regular team meetings though to motivate me to have finished the work by. Days included ringing up businesses to ask for slots to do promo in, designing invites and creating guest lists for advocacy events and booking entertainment such as a choir for a Blackpool Launch of Race for Life.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility which I really enjoyed. Highlights for me included managing the delivery of an advocacy event for Race for Life as well as a Blackpool Launch Event. My team leader encouraged me to take control on projects and to rely on my own judgement to make important decisions. However I also knew that she would be there if I ever needed a second opinion.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I wish to stay in the events and marketing job industry so this internship was very helpful. I have learnt numerous skills and gained a lot of experience that I can take on to my next job. I would have appreciated an opportunity for a certificated course to learn extra skills as the internship experience was very much what you make it, therefore every intern will have had a different experience and learnt different skills.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was very relaxed, friendly and enjoyable. Team meetings were organised well so that we always met everything we wished to cover on the agenda but they weren't strict with timings so some days we would finish early and some later. This happy atmosphere made it easier to converse with my colleagues when I first started the internship and allowed me to feel at ease during the first few activities I went on with them such as promos in the community.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised. There was a clear logical set of tasks for me to complete and the deadlines were set up far in advance. Only the last week and a half of the internship led to me having less to do because I had completed all of my other work. One improvement would be to have had extra 1-1 meetings by phone or in person whereby my work could be checked to see if there was anything extra I could be doing for my tasks.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There were not many opportunities for personal development or training. There were review meetings 3x over the 12 week internship that discussed how I was feeling about the internship and any extra skills I wished to learn. However besides this, there was not much personal training. It would have been good if they had set up a few courses for us to attend, perhaps ran by the mentors concerning topics such as phone calling businesses for marketing purposes.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would definitely apply to work with Cancer Research again. I believe that I made a good impression with my team and that I have learnt a variety of skills that would be applicable to a full time paid role with the charity. The internship provided a good taster of what the area event managers roles entail as well as the type of working hours they are expected to have inc. weekends.
