    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I began my placement back in July 2017 where I started working for Intel Corporation UK Ltd. I have been in the placement for eight months now and I have very much enjoyed my placement with Intel Corporation UK Ltd as it has taught me a lot of skills and put me in the practice of what the first 2 years of my university degree.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I feel greatly valued by my colleagues from the day I started. I have had to chance to take on a great amount of responsibility which makes me a valued part of the team. My role as a supply analyst involves a lot of communication with stakeholders for which I know I am a valued asset to them.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • When I started, I was given an on the job coach who was always there to help answer any questions I has. Throughout my placement, I have taken on additional roles and responsibilities for which I was always supported by my manager and the team, especially as I meet with my manager and coach separately every 2 weeks.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • When I first started the placement, I was mainly busy a lot of the time especially as I was still learning the new processes and eventually I had more time on my hands for which I got involved in efficiency projects and offered to take on additional roles within the team. Towards the end of my placement, I am rather busy throughout the day.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given plenty of responsibility throughout the placement. I knew how valuable my role was to the company as a supply analyst and that the warehouse I managed currently held multi-million dollars’ worth of inventory at any given time. I was offered to take on additional roles during the placement which shows how much responsibility was being passed down to me.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have noticed that throughout the placement year, so far I have improved and developed my skill set vastly. Intel Corporation is a great place to learn new skills and help develop them due to the relaxed working culture. I became more confident through the year and felt that my public speaking had improved dramatically. I know that these skills will help me as I go back to final year, especially with presenting to lecturers. The professionalism has improved my vocabulary which I am sure will help me going back to university.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in the office was rather relaxed. It was very enjoyable as everyone was so friendly and willing to help. From managers to interns, we were all treated the same. Intel have something called Great Place to Work where they do little things to make the atmosphere in the office great. There is even a table tennis and football table in the Swindon HQ which is great to go down and play at any point during the day.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My placement compared to others was very organized. I felt that the roles specified to me when I started were pretty much spot on. I did however take on additional roles but that was my choice which was great as I wasn’t forced to do anything that I didn’t want to. I did feel that some other internships were not very well organized.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As previously stated, I took on additional roles which improved further skills of mine which they helped strongly with the training to help me grow and to ensure I carried out the job correctly. The company itself runs regular trainings to keep all staff up to date, especially with product and market training to see where the company is going. The company also ran a lot of day or half day trainings to help improve people’s personal skills as well.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • This question I am not 100% sure as I don't know how good the prospects are with being hired back. Intel say that this placement year is more like a one year interview to a graduate role but I haven't heard of many interns come back as graduate positions.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • 3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • 3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife in Swindon is a very acquired taste - which was not for me. I lived in Swindon the entire year counting the days until I go back to university. A lot of the interns tend to go out every Thursday which is good and keeps the week interesting. I guess it is more of the company of the other interns rather than the nightlife itself.
