    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was neither great nor a disaster. I was given responsibility from the get-go and was able to contribute to the project my team was working on which allowed me to learn a lot..... until the project got cancelled. Since then the internship had its ups and downs. There were periods where I had work and periods where I didn't have anything to do.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • As said previously, I did have responsibility in the beginning especially because I was the only person in my team doing that work. After that, I had other activities some of them which I liked and some which I did not. As a result I communicated to my team things I would like to try instead of the work I was given and they were very supportive.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was assigned a mentor at the very beginning of the internship whose purpose was to introduce me to the tools and work I was going to be doing. If I had any technical issue or problem he would be the first person I would contact. I also was given support in pursuing my interests which was a very nice surprise. The only thing I would criticise here would be that sometimes I felt like I depended too much on other people's guidance, it would be nice to have documentation prepared that would help me get going without having to ask someone every time I got stuck.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There were times where I was vey busy and times where I had no work at all. In this sense this was a bit of a rollercoaster. The times where I was not busy sometimes were good as this allowed me to pursue other things I had an interest in.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was the only person in my team that did the work I was doing. Which gave me the feeling I had a decent level of responsibility. However, as an engineering intern it takes time to get to a place where you can truthfully contribute to a project.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This internship allowed me to clarify where I want to take my career to. I find this to be the best thing I took away from this internship. Intel's workplace culture is also very good which means this will be something I definitely consider in future jobs.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was always very friendly regardless of who you were talking to. There is a lot of opportunities to socialise with people from other teams at site events. The office isn't vey big either which means you can get to know most of the people if you happen to be a social butterfly.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I would say it was not very organised, in my case there wasn't a plan on what I was going to do throughout the entire internship. Sometimes you have to improvise and communicate what you want to learn. If the team is willing to support you then great if not you will have a problem. Luckily for me , my team demonstrated some support in having me pursue other things I would like to do

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • A lot of what I did was self-training, because I was pursing skills that were not necessarily my team's expertise. But even if it were the training I would get would never be like having a personal tutor going through each step of your learning. I always had someone there to ask for help, but at the end of the day my team members have jobs to do as well, so I spent some time learning on my own.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Financial Bonus

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Not very good. My team has recently been relocated somewhere else which means I will definitely will not come back to the same team. However as previous intern it will probably open doors for other jobs at the company.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes. There are about 50 interns in our site, which leads to a lot of social events between us students. There is also team dinners whenever we finish a quarter or a project is finished.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I personally not a big fan of night clubs and parties in general so I probably spend very little in this area. I also lived in a very nice house which happened to be very expensive. So my cost of living was a little higher than most. But I think that for a normal person, the area wasn't too bad in terms of finance.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I can't possibly comment on this topic, since I don't go to clubs. The other interns seemed to have fun though.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes there were loads. If you like sports, parties, clubs. Then there are opportunities to get involved in all those activities. The town is small though so there is a limit to how much you can do or explore.
