    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship scheme. I found the work to be very interesting and all of my team were very friendly. I enjoyed meeting all of the interns and the induction process was very well organised. We were given all of the information we needed for the placement at the start in the induction and I felt as though Esther was very supportive throughout.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt more valued by all of my colleagues as the internship went on. I think at the beginning of the internship they were unsure how confident I would be doing the work but then began to give me more responsibility.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a lot of support by manager and also all of my team . I felt as though I could ask them not only work related questions but help with job applications and job advice as well. My manager regularly checked in with me to make sure I was able to handle my workload and also helped me with general queries on a daily basis.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My workload would vary week to week as that is the nature of the department I was in. However, as I took on more responsibility throughout the internship I was busier. Because I was working between both public affairs and campaigns there were some weeks I was very busy doing work for both teams. During this time I ensured I made to-do lists and regularly checked in with my managers.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I think I was given more responsibility over the course of the internship. Due the public affairs team working with important MPs and civil servants it was important that I was confident in the work before I was able to take on too much in the area. I think at the beginning of the internship they were unsure how confident I would be doing the work but then began to give me more responsibility.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed many skills that I will take forward to a job. These included IT skills using Power point, Word, Outlook and excel. In addition I learnt to use CRM software and also CCMP. I l gained experience writing a variety of communications. These included, briefings, letters, website copy, biographies and emails.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was quite relaxed and I felt as though everyone was approachable. The atmosphere meant I was able to approach people and ask them questions even if they were in a different department.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I think the overall internship process has been very efficient. I think Esther has been very supportive throughout and answered all of my questions. I also think Esther was especially good at regularly keeping in contact with us whether it was emailing internal job vacancies or other opportunities within the charity that interns could get involved in.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I used my personal development pack to prepare for my reviews with my manager. However, I felt as though the packs were very long and not an essential tool.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I think the internship prepares you for a role within the organisation or elsewhere. I would definitely consider applying to a role internally. I think the friendly nature of the charity combined with its opportunities to develop a variety of skills are appealing.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was definitely a good social scene amongst the interns. We went for weekly drinks on a Thursday which was especially nice at the beginning when we were still getting to know each other. There wasn't so much of a social scene amongst the department I was working in but there were occasional birthday/ leaving drinks.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living in the area was quite expensive, however, with the £4 lunch budget it was easy to buy lunch. I travelled from Brighton each day which was covered by the charity, otherwise I would not have been able to do the placement.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I don't know about the nightlife in the area as we didn't go out during the internship. However the bard that we went to were very social and we got a discount as we were CRUK employees which made drinks relatively cheap

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were lots of opportunities to get involved in in terms of fundraising.i wouldn't say that there were many other activities to get involved in such as sports or groups like that. there were a few intern activities planed around fundraising.
