    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the internship. You get to see various aspects of the translation industry (sales, project management, QA checks, recruitment) and are able to even manage your own projects. Days can be quiet busy, however you really get to know how to prioritise and cope with working under pressure. Another aspect why this internship is so valuable and useful for the future is the fact that Language Connect gives you a lot of responsibility.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued by most of my colleagues. Like in most work places, some team members do so more than others. The people are really nice, they make sure you have enough work and value your help and knowledge that you bring to the company. Nevertheless, some of my colleagues were better at showing that than others.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Having a mentor gave me some sort of guidance throughout the internship. I could turn to that person whenever I had doubts or questions. It is however important to note that they may be busy sometimes too, so in case of immediate questions I simply asked someone else on the team.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Days can be very busy, especially as you get to manage your own projects. Your mentor made sure that you were not drowning in work. Small problems could have an impact on my work schedule, but being able to solve them was an even better feeling. If I ever ran out of quality assurance checks or project management tasks, I could always go back to recruiting new linguists.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I got more and more responsibility during my internship. Managing your own projects after only a month gives you a lot of responsibility, as you are normally the go-to person for the client in case of issues or further requests. This makes you feel like you are helping the company, which is not always the case with internships.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This internship has been so useful in order to get a job in that industry, as you get to see so many aspects of it. I truly believe that it was because of this internship that I got my current job. I also feel a lot more confident now to communicate with clients and linguists and I learnt how to use a CAT tool that I have never used/heard of before.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere is great. Everyone works very hard and yet they seem to find time to help you whenever they can. They are great examples of how to manage your time. However, I think it's the other interns that make the atmosphere even better. More experienced interns help new ones.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was very well organised.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company offered several training sessions, which were very useful. I could not go to some of them, but colleagues were always happy to talk me through the key points of those training sessions. They also shared any knowledge that was not covered during those training sessions on online platforms.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • They had a couple of positions open on different teams. A couple of interns seized the opportunity and managed to get permanent positions, but as I received a job offer from a different firm, I decided to leave Language Connect.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Interns would regularly organise dinners or lunches, which were always a blast. I was also invited to the Christmas party, which was great.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I didn't live there and only went out a couple of times, but I would say that the prices were normal London prices.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I didn't really go out.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were several, mainly organised by the interns, but I wished there had been a couple more to get to know the people a little bit better.
