    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the project I was given to do - the day-to-day tasks were varied, and I really gained a lot of practical skills that I wouldn't necessarily have the opportunity to gain at university.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My team were really brilliant, both in terms of giving me support when I needed it, and also being very relaxed and fun people to work with. In particular, my manager was fantastic, giving me plenty of autonomy with my project work but also the help and technical training I needed.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My desk was in my team's area and right next to my manager, so asking for guidance or just giving an update on how things were going was never a problem. I also had regular meetings with both my manager and my buddy, a member of my team who was assigned to help me with day-to-day issues in the first few weeks.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was moderately busy but not to the extent where I was struggling to complete the work. The project I was doing was quite research oriented, and some stages took longer than expected. However, there was a degree of flexibility about this, and I was also encouraged to further my investigations as I saw fit based on my results - this flexibility was an aspect I really appreciated.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a moderate amount of responsibility in that my own project was largely self run - I chose my own deadlines and was allowed to organise my own experiments, from designing the setup and sourcing components to organising the relevant health and safety checks. As my project was research based, it had minimal impact on current product lines; I wasn't given work that had an immediate bearing on the company's output. However, this is something quite specific to the project you're given; other interns I knew with more design-based work were directly contributing to new products.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Over the course of the internship, I received a fair amount of training in programming, CAD, workshop skills and PLM software usage. This was a really positive aspect - my degree course is quite theoretical and not particularly hands on, so developing these skills in the workplace was something I'd been looking forward to.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My favourite thing about working at Dyson was my fellow employees - incredibly talented engineers, but also very relaxed, personable people who genuinely enjoy what they do and are always willing to give advice or lend a hand. This made for a really positive and productive work environment - and also quite a fun workplace day-to-day.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was organised quite well - each intern was attached to a team from day 1, and then over the following few weeks there was a fairly smooth transition from a training-heavy schedule to one where individual work took precedence. There were a few organisational issues with training not being organised in time for some people, but overall this didn't pose too many problems - most teams were happy to teach their interns on the job anyway.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Each of us was given significant training relating to our job roles, and also wider training related to the company overall. It was sometimes the case that too much or too little training was scheduled for a particular person - however, this was pretty flexible, and in the majority of cases our line managers helped us to get the specific sessions we needed or were interested in, while allowing us to skip those that weren't necessary.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I was fortunate enough to receive an offer to return to Dyson following graduation. As I'm planning to continue at university for a masters, I was unable to accept - however, I'd very much like to return to the company at some point in the future, particularly within the research division.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a good social scene among interns, who would regularly go out for activities such as go-karting or to the lakes after work - there were also regular weekend trips, to Bristol or surfing in Cornwall. My team also had lunches together on a regular basis and post-work meals from time to time.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived locally to Dyson in Malmesbury, a relatively small town with quite a high living cost. There's also not a lot to do in terms of going out - but I knew several other interns also living nearby, and we would usually go to someone's house for dinner or a movie night, which was a fairly cheap way of socialising.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Malmesbury really doesn't have much nightlife at all - but there's always the option of going out in Bath or Bristol. One disadvantage is that there are no buses to train stations on Sundays - so unless you have a car, you are pretty much stuck in Malmesbury!

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were several opportunities to get involved with activities outside work; an internal noticeboard is used to advertise weekend trips or sports team practices. There was also Challenge Dyson, a mechanism building contest that I had the chance to be involved with, and the Dyson summer party.
