    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was enjoyable, and I met a significant number of people with high levels of experience. I felt I learnt a great deal about the industry. However, there were few cross divisional events or rotations (even using your own initiative, it was quite difficult to schedule a rotation to a desk other than the one you were assigned to).

    3/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The people I worked with spent a tremendous amount of time explaining how things work across both the desk and the industry.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was little useful support from HR, but that was compensated for by extremely supportive people across the team, who would spend time talking about their experiences in the industry, and giving you a good idea of where you might want to consider working in the bank.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Occasionally I'd have little to do, and would spend time reading up on the industry. Equally, I'd have a few weeks of staying in the office until past midnight. It depends entirely on the division you are working for.

    2/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was surprised by how much I could be trusted with by the end of the internship, I certainly felt that I had the opportunity to contribute more to the team than similar interns had in other banks.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It was very useful to have industry experience. I would have enjoyed more cross-divisional events, as I felt the internship was a bit constrained to the desk you were assigned to.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was pretty entertaining at times, but many people are on holiday during the summer, so it often felt rather quiet.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was set up well, with a good training programme at the beginning. However there was little opportunity to spend time with any division or desk beyond the one you were assigned to. You hardly ever saw interns from other parts of the bank.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was given lots of training for my division, and perks included free entry into paid exhibitions across many museums in London.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Car

    2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I had a job offer immediately after the internship.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • A significant proportion of interns worked too late to be able to socialise in the evenings, but there still was quite a good atmosphere between interns. We organised museum trips on weekends.

    2/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • DB kindly subsidised £1k of our accommodation costs. However, it should be pretty obvious that central london is not a particularly affordable area. A shoebox-sized dirty student accomodation room will cost you £200 per week and up.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are a lot of nice bars in the Liverpool Street area, but don't rely on getting out of work early enough to be able to go out and socialise on weekdays.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were plenty of opportunities, but they were only feasible for middle/back office jobs, as in some divisions, it was impossible to have left work and travelled halfway across London by 5:30pm. There was a CSR day, which was a good opportunity to meet fellow interns.
