    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office had a fun and relaxed atmosphere - all the staff were very friendly and approachable. The interns were sat at hot desks which allowed to both socialise and work together on projects. Seemed to be valued highly by our team and treated as equals to the rest of the colleagues; being invited to meetings, sent the round up emails etc.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The overall internship was very well organised; there were 40 of us across the company starting our internships at the same time and we were all inducted together which created a good community feeling. We had placement officers on hand throughout and personal mentors to talk to about how we were finding it/suggest any changes or developments we could make.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Cancer Research UK invest lots in their interns - they will provide any training or personal development that you ask for and sessions are provided by professionals in small groups so you benefit greatly. I attended workshops in; presentation skills, interview skills, cv/cover letter workshop, LinkedIn start up, digital marketing, Microsoft excel skills, recruitment tactics, communication skills and more!

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The company offer an internal jobs board which interns have access too - the placement manager also emails round any new jobs that come up within the company whilst we were working there. Managers encourage you to apply and help with the applications. My team even offered to create a role for me to enable me to carry on in the new year. Unfortunately I have to go back to university to finish my degree next year and so this wasn't applicable to me. However I have been encouraged to stay in contact and hopefully will have an opportunity to come back after university.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes; from the induction day the group of 40 of us interning were encouraged to socialise outside of work and get involved with each others events at work. We started an intern fundraising committee and also had a social sec. This meant we met up as a large group at least once a week socially and in smaller groups a few times a week to discuss projects that we were working on together. This bonded us as a group greatly. The cantine is a very sociable place and every lunch we would sit with our team or other interns.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Working in central London is unfortunately very expensive - especially for an unpaid placement student!! I was able to live at home just outside of London and commute which made it manageable. I would not have been able to take this internship if this was not the case. Socialising is expensive; both food and drinks are priced very highly but if you look for the good deals and go at the right times/days then you can still manage to socialise a bit.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There was a large variety of nightlife all very close to our office in Islington. Being in London anyway it is easy and quick to get anywhere surrounding areas which means there were lots of options of places to go for us. Whilst working in London we wanted to explore as much of these as possible and take advantage of our opportunity, so the social sec would find a different venue each Thursday night for us to try out!

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes - throughout the internship we were emailed with loads of opportunities to help/volunteer at or attend events that either the company was putting on or attending. I chose to throw myself in and sign up to lots of these which exposed me to working in different teams and try out different roles. I also got to meet loads of different staff and other people and also attend lots of really cool high value events!
