    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship, I was given much more real responsibility for active projects than I thought I would be. The work was challenging but really interesting, especially since I had to do quite a lot of technical programming and statistical analysis based work. I also had a lot of fun meeting everyone at Hymans, including people not in my department, and all the other interns.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone was super friendly and willing to help whenever I needed it. I also met a lot of people who didn't work directly in the team I was in but still took the time to explain to me what sort of work they did so I could get a better overview of the company as a whole.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager and buddy were particularly helpful, guiding me through all the details of everyday work and making sure I was doing okay. I could always go to them with any questions, technical or otherwise, and they were extremely professional yet friendly when helping me.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It varied a lot from day-to-day depending on what I was doing. Some projects I completed had no time limit, so it was more flexible to plan and easier to manage. I also had some time-constrained projects, including one in particular that had the deadline bought forward to within the day which led to an extremely busy day. I had an individual business project (mostly research-based) which lasted throughout my entire internship, so due to that I never had any moments when I had too little to do.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Aside from some simple training tasks and one day spent in a different department, all of my work involved real active work for the company. Even my individual business project was based on a current issue the company was looking to improve, but initially couldn't work on because of time constraints. I did a combination of client work and programming for internal systems used for analysis and consulting.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • On the technical side, I gained an incredible amount of knowledge about the industry and the workings of the firm. I also developed a lot of experience in coding and analysing real-life data, which will be invaluable for me in my career. On the other hand I also gained skills in communication, presentation, and teamwork, since I had to constantly work alongside other people, discuss opinions and obtain feedback. I also did some presentations at the end of my internship based on my business project, which gave me experience in presenting and public speaking.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone was incredibly friendly and there were lots of small touches that made the atmosphere around the office enjoyable, such as free fruit baskets twice a week, and the desk of chocolates and sweets from people who just came back from holiday. Although often most people would be concentrating on their work at their desk it was still reasonably relaxed and I was happy to talk to anyone.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Generally very well structured with the first week mostly training sessions and getting set up and introduced to the department. I also spent some time at the beginning reading up on knowledge and familiarising myself with the systems and software the firm used. There were small organisational issues, e.g. my laptop was an old spare that had un-updated software and some running issues, but there were always people around who would quickly and happily fix it for you.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I received a lot of training and support, especially at the beginning of my internship.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I have received a graduate offer after my internship and have accepted - I'm very excited to embark on my career with Hymans!

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were only eight interns at the same time as me so we got to know each other very well, especially since at the beginning we spent a lot of time on training sessions together. We would have lunch together most days and discuss casual things as well as work.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is more expensive than previous places I have lived in.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • N/A

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were many opportunities to get involved in activities outside work, but unfortunately due to my short period of time there I could only participate in a subset of these.
