    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Whilst on placement I was immediately welcomed as part of the team, and the IP Unite group. I enjoyed my placement and was able to enjoy the amazing experience of working in industry. GSK supports all IP students and sees them as a core part of the workforce, which is great in such a large company.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • After a few weeks, I was working as part of the normal team, working and supporting the department as would be expected of any other member of the team. I felt valued, and my experience and knowledge was called on during my placement, by members of my team and external teams.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support from management was there is required, senior staff were always happy to help, from within and in other departments. A level of autonomy is expected from management, with general guidance provided if needed / requested. I felt supported my my direct managers, and was able to talk to senior department management often.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to the nature of my department, some days could have serious work pressures, but on other days the workload could be quite relaxed. On the slower days, there was plenty of time for independent and project work, sourced from other departments, all was equally as challenging and enjoyable to do.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • After the steep learning curve when joining GSK, I was gradually given more responsibility, and worked alongside my team to provide support when required. The responsibility that was given to myself, and what was expected of my during my time at GSK was a major shock, but a very valuable experience.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • GSK allowed me to improve my technical skillset beyond what I would have been able just from University. Gaining industry knowledge that directly supporting my degree studies and future studies in the field. There are plenty of internal opportunities to develop different skills provided by GSK, and the student IP Unite group.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The department I worked in was a large varied group of individuals, so the office atmosphere was always fluid and enjoyable. Communal working areas / break areas and smart working, made the office a far more enjoyable and nicer place to work. Overall GSK was able to create a nice working atmosphere.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The GSK placement scheme managed very well, and was structed for student support. The scheme supported a group 'IP Unite' which arranged social events with other IP students. IP's worked within their departments, most of which has at least 2 - 3 IP students working in similar roles, to the level of a normal employee.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I did not receive any official training or certifications whilst on my placement. However, did receive extensive 'on the job' training from co-workers and senior members of my team. IP students are expected to learn independently with the help of the team, and this method of learning worked well for myself.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • All IP students records are kept on record for applications to the GSK future leader program. Direct entry is also possible, if a IP wishes to re-enter GSK into a specialist job role. Getting to know management within the organisation has opened up opportunities in this area. There is a strong trend of ex-IP students hired as graduates within GSK.
