    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • really enjoyed it, amazing company to work for. Huge perks such as events/parties that make you feel like a part of the business, it made it a very exciting company to work for.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • For the most part i was viewed as a member of the team, rather than an just intern. which was good in a way that I was integrated, but bad in the way that my learning experience was overlooked. My day to day tasks took priority over my learning.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had 3 different managers on my placement, two of which were nurturing and made time for catch-ups. One even made an effort to teach me more about buying when he took me out on buying appointments, but sadly he got promoted and moved off the department so i only had a couple of months with him. My new manager was then so busy that they rarely had time to talk about my progress, and even when we did talk about my progress there was little feedback for me on his behalf. This made it very hard to know if I was doing a good job or not as thats something you should be told by your manager! Unfortunately this was the manager I had for the majority of the placement so i ended up feeling a bit lost and undervalued.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • so incredibly busy it was very stressful as we did not have enough team members for the day to day tasks. I had to take on most of the responsibility for the BA role very early on, I was thrown into the deep end but so much so that I had to stay so late each night, sometimes until about 8pm, just to get on top of the work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot in terms of BA positions, i was in charge of samples and all responsibilities related to samples. But didn't get much responsibility in other areas where I would learn more as this was given to other more experienced BA's.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I felt that my job was just about the admin duties required of the position, which for the most part is not something that you can translate to other jobs (eg training on company specific software). I was bogged down in the day to day tasks that learning had to take a back seat, which for me was the most important part of the placement. It would have been good to be more involved/observe in actual buying decision/jobs. This largely depends on who your buyer is, so some interns get a better experience because their buyer involves them more with their job so they can actually see what its like to be a buyer, rather than just whats its like to be a BA.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • great atmosphere in menswear, mot departments spoke to eachother so there wasnt a segregation between departments. So many great events in menswear too that created such a buzz!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I was given very little training when I started, meaning I couldnt do my job efficiently and correctly which was incredibly stressful. I know that the interns this year got a lot more training at the start than we did so I think this issue will have been at least partially resolved by now, but it wasnt great for us that year! There needs to be more training for the buyers to nurture interns as some are good with interns and others just overlook them.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I wanted to get more training on the job for various things such as excel training, but I had to stop the course because my day to day tasks took priority. I would have got more out of doing that excel course than I would have continuing doing the same tasks for the whole placement but at the time I was told do get the day to day jobs done before doing any additional learning things, but the day to day jobs were so vast that I could barely keep on top of them, thus i couldn't get to do any extra learning.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • It would be a good place to go back to as a way of working up the career ladder, however I want to work somewhere that allows more job flexibility in terms of creativity and being able to tailor a role specific to you. ASOS is too big of a company to be able to do that, expecially not at BA/AB stage.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Great area for pubs and bars, we often went for drinks after work with colleagues.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • yes, both within my department for socials such as the breakfast club when we would go out once a month for breakfast just with our department it was a great way to get to know members of the team. And also ASOS menswear/company parties were epic, so memorable and one of the best parts of my placement experience. ASOS goes all out for a party. A
